> My home is near Kuaiji Mountain, With Orchid Pavilion on its right. Over generations, mountains and valleys have changed, And it long ago became desolate and wild. I drift across distant seas like duckweed, Regretting the years I've often wasted. There are many splendid outings for spring purification rites, But what meaning do such pleasures hold for me? Last evening I crossed the Yangzi River, My small boat tied to the willows on the bank. This morning is the Festival of the Third Day, And a good friend kindly invites me along. The riverside is not without its charms, But my heart delights in climbing the layered heights. From afar I point to the Hall of Peaceful Hills, Built by the venerable Old Man of Six Ones. During the Qingli era of the Song Dynasty, Virtuous officials succeeded one another as prefects. In their leisure they enjoyed feasting and wandering, Searching for marvels throughout forests and marshes. Refined elegance fades into mist and clouds, While jeweled halls perch on earthen mounds. The virtuous shepherds and renowned scholars Strove earnestly with ungrudging diligence. They opened up spacious halls and towers, Bringing the vast landscape into doors and windows. Towering structures became a grand spectacle, Washing clean the mountain spirits' dust. This was no mere delight for eyes and ears, But a heartfelt remembrance of noble predecessors. Thus I understood that in this great universe, Splendid creations can come from a single hand. If merit and virtue are not firmly established, They will wither like grass and trees. Enjoy the fragrant blossoms while the time is right, Savoring wine freely in lingering delight. Pulling down the ramie cloth, I'll eventually keep my promise; Offering herbs casually—don't make excuses. How vulgar are those customs of the Zhen and Wei rivers! Let us reform this shallow and frivolous age.
