> Red Bridge, old willows, leaves falling like frost in the wind, Nesting crows caw and cry toward the morning sun. West of Shu Hill, a towering structure rises, Wrapped in white mist and green, touching the sky. Ten thousand pines paint the narrow path with green, A wooden fish echoes from the forest chapel. The inscription from Luling remains unharmed, Dragons coiled in clouds, a vast misty grey. Though I come after the yellow leaves have fallen, The waters and stones shine bright, fit for roaming. At the Fifth Spring pavilion I sit to brew tea, Idly calling an old villager to talk of Chaisang. Hills of Jiangnan crowd into my view, The long river, a heavenly moat, roars and flows. Through countless kalpas the Six Dynasties temple still stands, Banners rise tall, flags flutter in the wind. Leaning on the high tower, I gaze straight north, Distant sails like birds sinking into the vast unknown. Meishan and Huaihai have long been silent, Only traces left in their writings. White-haired, recalling old times, my heart knots tight— How can I muster the strength for poetry again? Cold gathers in the ravines, the sunlight grows dim, Under the plum fence, branches bend low and rise. I deeply pity this lonely dweller of the desolate city, At year's end, unable to set down his travel gear.
