> Record of the Restoration of Qiling Temple

> Qiling Temple sits on Shugang Hill in Yangzhou, the same site as the Daming Temple named by Emperor Xiaowu of the Liu Song Dynasty. Its history of rise and fall is no longer traceable. To the west of the temple stands Pingshan Hall, built by Ouyang Xiu during his tenure as governor, and later restored by successive generations of admirers. On my diplomatic missions, I often passed through this place, and the resident monk, Master Daohong, would always offer me bamboo shoots and ferns, keeping me for long conversations. The willows before the hall and the calligraphy on the walls still seem visible to me. Moreover, the master has awakened to all things and is also skilled in poetry—man and place are truly suited to each other, so he spared no effort in restoring the temple. Since he assumed the abbacy in 1659, all the halls, pagodas, meditation rooms, kitchens, and storehouses that a temple should possess have been built, amounting to over a hundred rooms. Shugang Hill originally had no pines, so the master sought out pine saplings and planted ten thousand of them, high and low. Now they stand lush and dense, making the view resemble a mountain temple. There were originally no plum trees or bamboo either. Now the courtyard is shaded with交织 greenery, winding like a painting. Our emperor, during his southern tours, visited Pingshan twice and personally bestowed the two characters "怡情" (joyful heart) in his own calligraphy upon the master—praising not only the place, but also the man. Now a Jeweled Pavilion of the Heavens has been built to house this calligraphy. Never has the temple flourished as it does today, and much of this is due to the master's efforts. The master's name is De, his courtesy name Nan, and his style name Daohong. He was born into the Hu family of Jiangdu, a distant descendant of the esteemed Lord Wendi. At the end of the Ming Dynasty, Yangzhou was ravaged by war, and in his distress, he abandoned his family and went to the Shanyan Temple in Ganzhou, Jiangxi, where he received ordination under Master Zhizhi. In 1657, he accompanied his teacher to Qiling Temple. Three years later, when his teacher passed away, the master took charge of the temple's affairs. In 1663, a new abbot's quarters was completed, and faithful followers invited him to reside there. He then began giving public lectures and conducting ordination ceremonies. In 1664, local scholars and officials invited him to preside over Huizhao Temple, where he oversaw repairs. Before long, he returned to Pingshan. In the summer of 1690, he invited the gentry and protectors of the Dharma to take over the temple's permanent assets, and his Dharma heir, Master Li Gao, succeeded him as abbot. The master then retired to the Auspicious Meditation Cloister. He is the thirty-first-generation legitimate heir of the Dongshan lineage, the direct grandson of Master Po'an Deng, and the Dharma successor of Master Zhizhi. Because Pingshan was a place I once frequented, and the master was my friend beyond the mundane world, and his disciple Li Gao, himself a poet, traveled all the way to the capital to earnestly request this inscription from me, I have thus recorded what was told to me as above.
