歐公在揚州，暑月會客，取荷花千朵插畫盆中，圍遶坐席。又命坐客傳花，人摘一葉，盡處飲以酒。故《答呂通判詩》云：

> In Yangzhou, Lord Ouyang hosted guests during the hot summer months. He had a thousand lotus flowers placed in painted basins, arranged in a circle around the seating area. He then invited the guests to pass the flowers around, each person picking a petal, and the one left holding the last petal had to drink a cup of wine. Hence, in his poem "Reply to Assistant Magistrate Lü," he wrote:

千頃芙蕖蓋水平　揚州太守舊多情畫盆圍處花光合　紅袖傳來酒令行

> A thousand acres of lotus flowers cover the water's calm, The governor of Yangzhou, once full of tender feeling and charm. Where painted basins encircle, the radiance of blossoms blends, As red sleeves pass around, drinking games and toasts begin.

然維揚芍藥妙天下，可以奴視荷花，而是時歐公不聞有芍藥勝會何耶？東坡在東武，四月，大會於南禪、資福兩寺，翦芍藥置瓶盆中，供佛外以供賞玩，不下七千餘朵。有白花獨出於眾花之上，圓如覆盂，因有「兩寺裝盛寶瓔珞，一枝爭看玉盤盂」之詠。惜乎歐公未知出此。葛立方韻語陽秋

> However, the peonies of Weiyang were renowned throughout the world, so much so that they could overshadow lotuses. Yet during that time, why did Ouyang Xiu not mention any grand gathering for appreciating peonies? When Su Dongpo was in Dongwu, in the fourth month, he held a grand gathering at the two temples, Nanchan and Zifu. Peonies were cut and placed in bottles and pots—not only for offering to the Buddha but also for appreciation, numbering no fewer than seven thousand blooms. Among them, a single white flower stood out above all others, perfectly round like an upturned bowl. This inspired the verse: "The two temples adorned with precious garlands, all vying to see the single jade-bowl blossom." It is a pity that Ouyang Xiu never knew to do such a thing. <note place="inline">Ge Lifang, "Yunyu Yangqiu"</note>
