開禧邊釁之起，揚郡本無侵軼，時鎮帥畏怯欲遯，假清野之名，縱火於外，負郭室屋，延燔一空。而堂遂為荊榛瓦礫之場。其時，郭倪知揚州，吏部閻蒼舒有《贈揚州郡帥郭侯詩》云：

> When the conflict at the Kaixi border began, Yangzhou itself was not invaded or encroached upon. At that time, the garrison commander, being fearful and timid, wanted to flee. Under the pretext of "clearing the fields" (a scorched-earth strategy), he set fires outside the city, and the houses near the city walls were burned to the ground, leaving nothing but ruins. The government hall thus became a field of brambles and rubble. At that time, Guo Ni served as the prefect of Yangzhou, and the official Yan Cangshu wrote a poem titled \*"Presented to Governor Guo of Yangzhou"\*, which said:

平山堂上一長歎　但有衰草埋荒邱歐仙蘇仙不可喚　江南江北無風流

> On Pingshan Hall, a long sigh I release, Only withered grass buries the ancient mound. Masters Ouyang and Su cannot be summoned, North and south of the Yangtze, no more elegance is found.
