> During the Yuan dynasty's heyday, there was a wealthy man surnamed Zhao in Yangzhou who was known for his generosity and hospitality. He had a tower called the Moonlight Tower, and although many had written spring couplets for it, none quite satisfied him. One day, Zhao Ziang passed through Yangzhou, and the host, hearing of his arrival, invited him up to the tower, where a lavish banquet was prepared in his honor. Midway through the festivities, the host brought out writing materials and requested a spring couplet. Zhao Ziang took up his brush and wrote: "Spring breeze fills the garden with three thousand guests; Moonlight shines upon Yangzhou's foremost tower." The host was overjoyed and, as a token of gratitude, presented him with all the silverware from the banquet. Guan Yanshi also composed a ci poem in praise of the tower, set to the tune "Water Dragon's Chant": "At dusk, the north wind settles, The tower is filled with moonlight, bidding guests to stay. Beyond the fragrance of tangerine blossoms, A jade flute begins to sound. Her slender brows seem to envy— Twelve balustrades that easily cut off The wind and rain of the mortal world. Gazing at the rainbow bridge's shadowed eaves, The purple mushrooms warm the dust, Again stirring the urge to climb and gaze afar. Looking back over the western hills and southern shores— For whom do the clouds and mists dance so wildly? Rivers and passes are as they are, Not worthy of riding cranes, Yet still fitting for coming and going. When the waters recede and lakes grow calm, The small quilt has turned— No longer is this my homeland. So let us leisurely raise our cups to wine, While dragon's fragrance seeps into the silk, Writing this ode to Pingshan." <note inline>From the "Record of Ci Poetry Events"</note>
