### 掃塔拈香法語

> Incense Offering at the Pagoda

四千餘里，到來今已一週。無縫塔前，如何趨敬？不肖拈瓣死貓頭，爇向爐中，薰透先師鼻孔，表祝哀靈。我本師兮，拂拂授授。臨濟正傳入髓兮，出世天台。法祥棲真、船子三塔，保安六處名藍，大闡爐開兮，權衡電轟。情與無情利益兮，龍驤虎驟。永決慈垂接兮，空期未滿。百年萬人仰企兮，古杭城內。擲筆大笑兮，頓超佛祖。格外無窮正法眼兮，住世少延。我不肖子輩兮，恩過太嶽。慧如海兮，我身無帖。愚濁兮，不肖哀靈塔下，罪莫上饗。

> Over four thousand miles I have come, and it has already been a week since my arrival. Before the seamless stupa, how shall I approach in reverence? This unworthy one picks a dead cat's head, lays it upon the brazier, and burns it so that its smoke permeates my late master's nostrils, as an offering to his grieving spirit. My master! You passed the robe and seal, hand to hand. The true lineage of Linji entered your very marrow, and you arose in the world at Tiantai. You graced Faxiang, Qizhen, the Boatman's Stupa, and six famous monasteries at Bao'an; you opened the great furnace wide, and the balance of your teaching thundered like lightning. Sentient and insentient beings all benefited, as dragons soared and tigers leaped. You vowed eternal compassion with your guiding hand, yet your empty promise remained unfulfilled—your time was cut short. For a hundred years, countless people looked up to you within the ancient city of Hangzhou. You threw down your brush with a great laugh, instantly transcending Buddhas and patriarchs. Your boundless Dharma-eye, beyond all convention, lingered in the world but briefly. We, your unworthy disciples, owe you a kindness greater than Mount Tai. Your wisdom was vast as the sea, yet I have no token to match it. Foolish and turbid, this unworthy one, at the foot of his grieving master's stupa, offers but this humble gift—may it be accepted.
