### 寄東山長老

> To the Elder of Eastern Mountain

去春二月，遣人還長松，報東山一帖尚在平江雙塔。夏五月，因仝鄉朱孝廉北游，遂仝舟到廣陵，得觀淮海故里。留六十日，將欲還蘇，忽秦氏一菴名福海者虛席，郡守及紳士邀主方丈，再辭不能脫。今到院半歲矣，雖欲西還，止屬空談。然黔中化行十七年，而相信吾道者，皆賴吾徒代為宣揚，所謂若舌即吾舌矣。大耑明春整頓歸帆，必從銅巖。談風笑雨，一洒五六年，離腸結耳。空囊無物寄回，俟面時方道苦衷。

> Last spring in February, I sent someone back to Changsong with word that the letter from Dongshan was still in Pingjiang's Twin Pagodas. In the summer, during the fifth month, I happened to travel north with my fellow townsman, Scholar Zhu, and we shared a boat to Guangling, where I had the chance to see the former residence of Huaihai. I stayed for sixty days and was about to return to Suzhou when suddenly, a vacancy arose at the Qin family temple named Fuhai. The local magistrate and gentry invited me to take charge as abbot, and though I declined twice, I could not escape the duty. Now, half a year has passed since I arrived at the temple, and though I wish to return west, it remains but an empty wish. Yet, in Guizhou, the teachings have spread for seventeen years, and those who believe in our path have all relied on my disciples to propagate it on my behalf—truly, their tongues have become my tongue. I plan to set sail back next spring, and will surely pass through Tongyan. There, we shall talk of wind and laugh at rain, washing away the knots of longing that have gathered over these five or six years apart. My purse is empty, with nothing to send back; I shall speak of my hardships when we meet face to face.
