> From the base of Tai O Mountain, following the mountain's foot around to Elephant Pass, there is a small pavilion. Before this pavilion, a path leads straight up to the middle of Ginger Mountain, where five meditation huts stand side by side. This is the ancient grotto of Pengying. Because it enshrines Guanyin Bodhisattva, local people on land and at sea call it the Guanyin Temple. Built in the second year of the Xuantong reign (1910), its founder was a female practitioner named Ye Shankai, also known as Dudong. On the right side of the building is inscribed "The Home of Meditation Huts." Above the main entrance hangs a plaque reading "Pengying Ancient Grotto," inscribed by Gong Fangzhai, along with a couplet: "Peng Island embraces the Garden of Tranquility, seated on Ginger Mountain, spreading the Dharma realm; Yingzhou reveals sacred traces, bestowing grace like rain for the people's livelihood." Inside the temple courtyard, there is a long couplet from the first year of the Republic of China (1912) by Zeng Xianzhong, which reads: "Lotus throne cradles clouds of compassion; the Buddha's Dharma is boundless, penetrating true freedom and joy. Pengying meets the sunrise of immortals; celestial bonds spread widely, cultivating independent mystical insight." Another couplet from the second year of the Republic of China (1913) by Huang Bocheng says: "The pure sounds of mountain and water—one bell in the clouds; the blessed land of immortals—three peaks beyond the sky." Auntie Ye Dong was originally a follower of the Xiantian Dao (Way of Former Heaven). Initially, the female practitioners in the grotto adhered to the Xiantian Dao system: first as protectors of the Way, then taking refuge, then seeking the Way, and finally receiving Heavenly Grace before becoming teachers of others. In 1940, after Auntie Ye Dong passed away, and by 1941, Auntie Zhang the Second, Auntie Xiao the Sixth, and Lady Jingguan formally took refuge with Master Fache of Bao Lian Monastery, becoming disciples of the Three Jewels. Thus, the system changed from Xiantian Dao to Buddhism. In 1942, Auntie Guirong became the abbess. In 1951, Master Haishan came from mainland China to Hong Kong and arrived at Guanyin Temple on Tai O Mountain. The female practitioners invited him to be the abbot. In 1953, the temple's facade was renovated. The original horizontal plaque "Pengying Ancient Grotto" and the three pairs of couplets were all removed, and a new door plaque inscribed "Guanyin Hall" was installed.
