### 慧修院

> Wisdom Cultivation Institute

由鹿湖竹園精舍向下山坡。遶路至東邊山脚。有大靜室一座。即慧修院。建築一連三幢。與竹園模型相同。民國廿三年荃灣東普陀寺茂峰上人皈依弟子聖修女居士於此開山創建。至民國三十四年禮茂峰上人出家。現由真明比丘尼主理。真明俗姓鄒。原籍北京。寄居新會。在北京貞嚴小學及婦孺醫院產科專科畢業。四十九歲來山。在院內教小學生兩三年。遵照小學科目教授。現各生已往各處升學了。平時禪淨雙修、曾建楞嚴佛七道場三年。延請法師講楞嚴法華全部及梵網心地戒品。年五十八出家。向昂平寶蓮寺求筏可和尚受具足戒。民國廿四年山上有巨石一塊。重數百斤。由山頂墜下至院後墻相距一尺而止、並無擦及墻壁。至今墜石猶存。見者皆云奇跡。院內懸茂峰和尚題聯云。慧能證性輝千古。修聖圓明耀萬年院門刻聯云。慧日高懸。三界眾生皆獲耀。修成妙智。十方群類盡沾光。

> From the Deer Lake Bamboo Grove Monastery, walking down the hillside and following the path around to the foot of the eastern mountain, there is a large quiet meditation hall called the Wisdom Cultivation Institute. Its building consists of three connected structures, similar in design to the Bamboo Grove Monastery. In the twenty-third year of the Republic of China (1934), laywoman Shengxiu, a disciple of Abbot Mao Feng of the Eastern Putuo Temple in Tsuen Wan, founded this institute on the mountain. In the thirty-fourth year of the Republic (1945), she formally took monastic vows under Abbot Mao Feng. The institute is now managed by Bhikshuni Zhenming. Zhenming’s lay surname was Zou, originally from Beijing, later residing in Xinhui. She graduated from Beijing Zhenyan Primary School and the Obstetrics Department of the Women and Children’s Hospital. At age forty-nine, she came to the mountain and taught primary school students at the institute for two or three years, following standard primary school curriculum. Those students have since gone on to further study elsewhere. She practices both Chan and Pure Land Buddhism, and once held a three-year Shurangama Buddha Recitation Retreat, inviting Dharma masters to teach the complete Shurangama Sutra, Lotus Sutra, and the Brahma Net Sutra’s Bodhisattva Precepts. She took monastic vows at age fifty-eight, receiving full ordination from the Venerable Qiuke at Po Lin Monastery on Lantau Island. In the twenty-fourth year of the Republic (1935), a huge boulder weighing several hundred jin fell from the mountaintop and stopped just one foot short of the institute’s back wall, without even scratching it. That boulder remains there to this day, and all who see it call it a miracle. Inside the institute hangs a couplet by Abbot Mao Feng: "Wisdom reveals true nature, shining for a thousand ages; Cultivation perfects luminous clarity, illuminating ten thousand years." The institute’s gate is engraved with a couplet: "The sun of wisdom shines high, enlightening all beings in the three realms; Through cultivated wondrous insight, countless beings in all directions receive its light."
