> The Hawaii Japanese Buddhist Federation held a grand ceremony on December 8, 1956, to honor the anniversary of Shakyamuni Buddha's Enlightenment. They extended invitations to members of the Chinese Buddhist Association, expressing their hope that everyone would attend to demonstrate the unity and cooperation between Chinese, Western, and Japanese Buddhists in celebration. This was also an occasion for worldwide fellowship. On that day, we, along with members of the Chinese Buddhist Association, went to the International Cinema, which served as the temporary celebration venue. Upon arrival, we were welcomed and seated by Japanese Buddhist monks. During the ceremony, the British master Hunter led the incense offering and the commemorative rites. Over two thousand people participated that day, creating an exceptionally harmonious and lively atmosphere, as if all beings from across the seas were united as one.

> Today, we gather here with friends from around the world in Honolulu, Hawaii, on the shores of the Pacific Ocean. Here, we all enjoy equality, freedom, and the rule of law, living and working in peace and contentment. On this auspicious and precious occasion, we joyfully come together with the Buddhist community and friends from all walks of life to celebrate. Two thousand five hundred years ago, in Kapilavastu, India, in the palace of King Śuddhodana, Prince Siddhārtha was born. From birth, he was endowed with sacred wisdom, compassion, and patience. Observing the suffering of all beings, he renounced worldly glory, left home to seek the path, endured the harsh winds and snow of the mountains, sustained himself with simple grains, and persevered through heat and cold. When the time and conditions were ripe, upon seeing the morning star, he attained profound enlightenment and achieved the supreme awakening, becoming known as Śākyamuni Buddha. To liberate all beings from the sufferings of birth, old age, sickness, and death, he realized the supreme, equal, and true awakening within himself. With boundless, impartial compassion, he lit the lamp of liberation to dispel the deep darkness of the world, guiding and leading all sentient beings toward the shore of awakening, affirming the equality of all living beings. Below, we will briefly discuss the truth of how the Buddha interacted with people with equality and liberation.
