> There are things in this world that can be determined and things that cannot, and there are also numbers that can be settled and numbers that cannot. Now, by looking at the foundation of the former master's pagoda, we can see this is indeed so. Before I left Qinglong, the thought of building a pagoda had already been brewing in my mind for a long time. After I arrived at Shanquan, the desire to build the pagoda never ceased for a single moment. The only difficulty was finding a piece of land suitable for the foundation. I searched in four directions, and only the tea garden east of the stream seemed somewhat suitable for a pagoda base. So I invited Master Qie of Bianshan to perform the ceremony of opening the shrine and cremating the remains. We obtained countless large and small sarira, and the spiritual bones shimmered in five colors, while the teeth and eyes remained exactly as they were in life. Unexpectedly, heaven showed its divine will, and the ancestors silently blessed us. Suddenly, at the beginning of winter, a merchant from Huizhou found a plot behind Wansong Ridge and was willing to pay a high price for it, but the old proprietor had already sold it with a deed. I tried my best to mediate, and had the two plots—the tea garden and the ridge behind—divined by turtle shell and yarrow stalks, and lots drawn before Wei Tuo. Both pointed to the ridge behind, so is this not a predetermined number? However, this place is a bare mountain that most people have overlooked. Could it be that heaven has reserved it to fulfill the former master's final instructions? The land rises from Tongguang Mountain, where the temple sits upon the Sun Gold Star, and further branches a Xin Dragon vein to the left, connecting five or six water bubbles before turning back against the current, with the intention of the dragon looking back to its ancestor. At the entry point is the Taiyin Gold Star, with a hollow opening and a protruding lip, surrounded by dragon and tiger ridges in four or five layers of peaks, thirty-six reverse cases, all densely arranged in embrace, holding the water source at Yin and Gen, turning through Xun, Si, and Wu, winding its way to the hall, returning to the Xu storehouse, entering the cave mouth, disappearing to who knows where. The turtle diviner said: "The situation is grand and magnificent, the qi and veins are majestic." Indeed, this is not mistaken. Now looking at this land, it appeared neither earlier nor later, but only at the time when the pagoda was to be built. Were it not for heaven's predetermined number, how could this have come to pass? Moreover, the current mountain orientation is very auspicious, and combined with the excellent day of the twenty-fourth of the tenth month, I humbly proceed with the burial. However, the cost of building the pagoda requires no less than three hundred taels of silver, and at present we have not even gathered one-tenth of that. I do not know how we will manage in the future. I am sending this letter to inform you of these matters. If you could spare some time from your busy schedule, perhaps you might honor us with a visit to the pagoda site, and then you will believe that the mountain spirit has been waiting for this moment.
