> Next, for those who wish to cultivate mindfulness of moral discipline, let them dwell in solitude and contemplate: "Truly, I do not break the precepts, nor have I cut them off; they are without blemish, without stain, untainted, praised by the wise, free from clinging, and conducive to the arising of concentration." In this way, through the virtue of unbroken observance, one reflects upon one's own ethical training.

> They should recollect the precepts. If laypeople, they should recollect the lay precepts; if monastics, they should recollect the monastic precepts. Whether lay or monastic, just as a garment with a torn edge—none of those precepts are broken from beginning to end—because they are unbroken, they are called "unbroken." Like a garment with a hole in the center—none of those precepts are broken in the middle—because they are not cut through, they are called "uncut." Like a cow with a black or red body but with spots of a different color on its back or belly that is round—those precepts are not broken in just two or three places, and because they have no blemishes, they are called "unblemished." Like a cow with patches of various colors—those precepts are not broken here and there sporadically, and because they are not mixed with stains, they are called "unstained."

> Or undifferentiated—not destroyed, not cut off, unstained, and unmixed—because it is not ruined by the seven kinds of sensual attachment, nor by anger, hatred, or other defilements, it is therefore undestroyed, uncut, spotless, and unmixed.

> These precepts are free from the grip of craving, remaining in a state of unrestraint—thus they are "unrestrained." They are praised by the Buddha and other enlightened beings, so they are "praised by the wise." Since they are not clung to through craving or wrong views, and no one can accuse them, saying, "These precepts are your fault," they are "without clinging." They give rise to access concentration, absorption concentration, or the concentration of the path and its fruition, so they are "conducive to concentration."
