余不肖樸遫，闇淺承乏。樂成域中有雁蕩諸山之勝，諸貴人逸士驅車挾策所經遊者，靡不嘖嘖稱竒絕云。不肖素聞其槩，至邑累月，曾弗一徃，非惟不暇，亦有所不敢也。迨司理胡公以鹺臺之命，查盤蒞下邑，始得從登此山，裴徊焉。嗣以二院經臨一舟至其地，亦弗睱一觀也。公餘稍取山志繙閱，彼其巖洞泉谷、寺剎景物、花草禽魚，與夫記傳詩賦之類，盖井然煥然，稱大備哉。昔人謂天下之治亂，󳮱于洛陽；洛陽之盛衰，󳮱于園囿。自宋至國，朝鴈山之盛衰屡󷭘。方……

> I, unworthy and unlearned, lacking in wisdom yet thrust into this position by necessity, took delight in the fame of Yandang's many mountains and scenic wonders. Every nobleman and recluse who journeyed there by carriage, with staff in hand, could not help but exclaim in wonder at their extraordinary beauty. Though I had long heard of their magnificence, for months after arriving in this county, I never once went — not only due to lack of leisure but also from a sense of hesitation. It was only when Judicial Commissioner Hu arrived on an official salt-tax inspection and visited our humble district that I finally had the chance to ascend these mountains and linger there. Later, when the two provincial authorities passed through, I took a boat to the area but still could not spare the time for a proper visit. In my spare time, I began flipping through the local mountain gazetteer. Its records of rock formations, caves, springs, valleys, temples, scenic spots, flora, fauna, birds, and fish, along with travelogues, poems, and prose — all were meticulously arranged and resplendent in their completeness.
