> Reply to Layman Xi Meng

大塊勞生，誰是閒者？惟老居士識淵德邃，頤養古稀之天，視彼役役塵網者，烏足絜其短長哉？別來八載，重晤末由，翹首煙霞，徒切夢想。承惠佳山水，淡遠可人，儼如攜我過瀟湘洞庭，與摩詰相對語耳。高年勝筆，足傳千古，領謝曷既！外附拙偈一幅、五燈一部，聊耑芹祝，幸筦存為愛。

> The great world tires all beings with toil—who among us is truly idle? Only the venerable elder, whose wisdom runs deep and virtuous roots grow strong, nourishes his heavenly years in quiet cultivation. Look at those trapped and running in the dusty net of worldly affairs— how could they ever measure up to you? Eight years have passed since we parted, with no chance to meet again. I gaze toward distant mist and clouds, yet all I can do is dream. How grateful I am for the exquisite landscape painting you sent me— so pure, so distant, so full of charm. It feels as if you have taken me by hand across the Xiao and Xiang rivers and Lake Dongting, where I could speak face to face with the poet-painter Wang Wei himself. For a man of advanced years to wield such a surpassing brush— a work worthy of being passed down for a thousand ages— my thanks can never be fully expressed. Enclosed herewith is a simple gatha of my own, along with one copy of \*The Five Lamps\*. I send these humble gifts as an expression of my sincerest wishes. May you kindly accept them and treasure them with fondness.
