### 第二世馬祖道一禪師

> Second Patriarch Mazu Daoyi

問：「除卻牛車，畢竟作麼生用？」

> Question: "If you remove the ox cart, what is it ultimately used for?"

答：「露出尾巴。」

> Answer: "It shows its tail."

頌曰：

> The verse says:

欲覓家珍一事無，坐禪作佛費工夫，耕翻心地歸家去，臥聽高林唱鷓鴣。

> Trying to find some family treasure, but there's nothing there— Sitting in meditation, striving for Buddhahood, all wasted effort. Plow the field of your own mind and return home, Then lie back and listen to the partridges singing in the tall trees.
