### 復上本師啟丁巳

> Returning to my original teacher, starting in 1917.

六月十九日，敬接慈命，焚檀九頓，諷至再三，喚徹生回堂，不覺茫然。生自南歸，每于啣哺周旋，靡非謨慮法門掃地，柱石難求。于癸丑秋，啟古字山法兄佛冤和尚回堂，甚適所願，將祖庭大任一肩擔荷，不惟生等快滿素心，兼錦官緇素紳衿云：「日月出矣，爝火潛輝，法門之幸。」邇聆潛行舊隱，法門紀綱一旦拋卻，未識何意？徹生展讀之初，如伏日飲冰，祖庭大任非行弗履、非德弗居，豈小補哉？生之劣質，行寡力微，僅可深藏幽谷，以待餘年。伏乞慈憫，置生于補次之外，如有復我，志必他山。謹啟。

> On the nineteenth day of the sixth month, I respectfully received your kind instruction. After burning nine bundles of sandalwood and reciting the invocation repeatedly, I summoned Che Sheng back to the temple—and found myself utterly at a loss. Since Sheng returned from the south, whenever I have attended to daily duties, nothing has occupied my thoughts more than the fear that the Dharma might crumble and that no true pillar of support could be found. In the autumn of the Guichou year, I invited my Dharma brother, the Venerable Buddha Yuan of Ancient Words Mountain, to return to the temple—a move that suited my wishes perfectly. I entrusted him with the great responsibility of carrying on our ancestral lineage. This not only brought relief to Sheng and others, but even the monks, laity, and scholars of Jinguan remarked: "Now that the sun and moon have arisen, the light of the firefly fades—what a blessing for the Dharma." Recently, however, I have heard that he has quietly withdrawn into seclusion, casting aside the very foundation of the Dharma tradition. I cannot fathom his intention. When Che Sheng first read your letter, it was like drinking ice water on a hot summer day. The great responsibility of our ancestral lineage cannot be carried without action, nor upheld without virtue—how could it be a mere minor task? Sheng's own humble abilities are meager; my strength is limited. I am only fit to hide deep in a quiet valley and wait out my remaining years. I humbly beg for your compassion: place Sheng beyond the scope of any supplementary appointment. If I am called back again, my resolve lies firmly with other mountains. Respectfully submitted.
