> Postscript to Jinjiang Chan Lamp

> The true constant has no shape and cannot be compared. When expanded, it perfects all practices; when gathered, it silences myriad activities. Bodhi, Nirvana, Suchness, Buddha-nature—the vajra circle, the chestnut thorn, the banner of light, the sun-and-moon lamp, and countless other forms—all flow and fill from this source. Though we attach names to things, they can never grasp its profound mystery. Attached to heaven, it rises high; attached to earth, it rests peacefully; attached to the sun and moon, it shines in their place. Yet even though things reflect it impartially, it cannot completely illuminate every dark path. But attached to a lamp, it can break the darkness of a thousand years. In essence, it is a solitary light shining alone; in function, it is a continuous flame linking brilliance. That which is dark becomes bright, and that brightness never ends. This book is not called a Chan record but a Chan Lamp, so that its transmission may be endless. Is it not the lamp of the wisdom-life of Buddhas and patriarchs? From the World-Honored One holding up a flower and Mahakasyapa’s smile, to the cutting off of an arm to calm the mind, the bright mirror that is not a stand, and the realization that defilement cannot be attained; from “mind is Buddha” to a shout that deafens the ear, revealing great potential and function, to a fist returned under the ribs—in all of this people have raised a banner of light, like a net of precious threads, so that light interweaves with light, encompassing the whole world. Our original teacher, Elder Zhang, after receiving mind-seal from the master of Double Cassia, led seven monasteries and propagated the essential teaching. Later he returned to Shu, where the military commissioner Zhang Kunyu and other officials requested him to restore the ancestral temple of Yuanwu. Over more than thirty years, in his spare moments from responding to beings, he gathered fragments from the ashes of time, collected essential sayings from various schools, and compiled them into this book, titled the \*Jinjiang Chan Lamp\*. In the autumn of the Guiyou year, he ordered the disciple Che Sheng to carry the manuscript eastward to be carved for printing at the Lengyan Monastery. It brings together ancient and modern masters, all from the essence of the true constant, to seal and illuminate the great matter of causes and conditions and to set it forth. One section of the banner of light, extending continuously as an endless lamp. Though it is said we are far from the sage’s time, the assembly on Vulture Peak remains present, as if never dispersed—this is my teacher’s heartfelt effort to protect the Dharma. Sadly, for what is long past there is no verification, yet transmission depends on a source. If there are omissions or incomplete collections, we can only hope that fellow practitioners of high understanding will seek them out and supplement them.
