### 示融一監院

監院於方丈禮云：「乞和尚一語，以垂於後。」老僧云：「法語者，乃修行之法則也。汝既為監院，必要起早睡晚，料理常住，廢寢忘餐，了明己事可也。設若依稀而道理未明，倘如忽略而因果不識，則未免流入巨浸。不見一僧於門外忽逢二鬼現前，便云：『奉大三差來取長老。』僧云：『我乃寺中監院，有院事未明，惟乞轉訴，待我七日，將院事交待即來。』其鬼便去。僧回寺，晝夜苦參，於七日後，二鬼尋覓不見。倘汝有如是志力，如是勇猛，方可離諸苦趣，而高登極樂矣。致囑！致囑！」

> The monastery supervisor bowed before the abbot and said, "I beg the master to impart a teaching that may guide future generations." The elder monk replied, "A Dharma teaching is a principle for practice. Since you serve as the monastery supervisor, you must rise early and retire late, attend diligently to the affairs of the community, forget sleep and meals, and clarify your own affairs. If you remain vague and fail to understand the principles, or if you neglect and remain ignorant of cause and effect, you will inevitably sink into deep waters. Have you not heard of the monk who, outside the gate, suddenly encountered two ghosts appearing before him? They said, 'We are sent by the Great King of the Underworld to fetch the elder.' The monk replied, 'I am the supervisor of this monastery, and there are matters of the community I have yet to clarify. I beg you to convey my plea—allow me seven days to hand over my duties, and then I will come.' The ghosts then departed. The monk returned to the monastery and practiced with intense diligence day and night. After seven days, the two ghosts came searching but could not find him. If you possess such determination, such courage, only then can you depart from all realms of suffering and ascend to the highest bliss. Take heed! Take heed!"
