### 示自慶禪人

出家一事，外無他說，總為生死事大，無常迅速，誠恐輪轉於六道之中，無有丁日，故爾割愛辭親，離家別業，特為了脫生死，證聖超凡，不是涉水登山，遨遊海嶽，必須親近一明眼宗師，求個的當話頭，或住雲堂，或居淨室，孤迥迥高豎脊梁，峭巍巍壁立萬仞。正恁麼時，佛來亦不迎，魔去亦不顧，單單一味凝定眉目，回光內照，看者一動一靜、一喜一怒底是個甚麼消息？是個甚麼光境？如是研磨將去，無拘歲月，莫論春秋，一旦豁然貫通，自是七通八達，那時河海溪山不出汝之掌握矣。

> The matter of leaving home to become a monastic is not about any external reasons. It is entirely because the matter of birth and death is of utmost importance, and impermanence arrives swiftly. I truly fear being trapped in the endless cycle of the six realms, with no day of liberation in sight. Therefore, I cut off attachments, bid farewell to loved ones, leave home, and abandon worldly pursuits—all for the sole purpose of transcending birth and death, attaining enlightenment, and rising above the ordinary. This is not about traveling across mountains and rivers, or wandering through seas and peaks. It is essential to draw near to a clear-eyed master, to seek a genuine point of inquiry. Whether dwelling in a cloud hall or residing in a quiet chamber, stand alone and upright, with a backbone straight as a cliff, firm and unshakable as a towering peak. At such a time, even if the Buddha comes, do not welcome him; even if demons depart, do not pay them heed. Simply and single-mindedly focus your gaze inward, turning the light of awareness back upon itself. Observe every movement and stillness, every joy and anger—what is the underlying reality? What is the true nature of these experiences? Continue to polish and refine in this way, without being bound by the passage of time, without counting the years. Then, one day, understanding will break through, and everything will become clear and interconnected. At that moment, rivers, seas, valleys, and mountains will all be within your grasp.
