In the autumn of the year Guisi during the Shunzhi era, the Master accepted the invitation of Governor Zhang and other local Dharma protectors to begin teaching at Yunyan Chan Temple in this prefecture.
The master ascended the hall, offered incense, and made a blessing for the emperor. He then said:
"The single phrase from before the primal void encompasses everything. When the totality manifests before us, not even a speck of dust remains. It is utterly bare, with no gaps or seams, completely open, with no barriers or obstructions. Thus, the World-Honored One held up a flower, and Kashyapa smiled. Bodhidharma came from the west, and the Sixth Patriarch transmitted the robe. Qingyuan said this sacred truth need not be clung to; Shitou spoke of carrying an axe to stay put; Yaoshan’s long roar echoed for a thousand miles. Our own temple master, the Ancestor Wuzhu Sheng, opened his jeweled mirror widely, proclaiming that both approaching and avoiding are wrong, like a raging mass of fire.
Eight hundred years later, the Path has grown distant and people have become ignorant. Fortunately, we met Magistrate Zhang, who used this singular karmic connection to bring peace and benefit to countless people, without relying on extra effort. Now I have been invited to ascend this seat and expound the dharma, so that those who have not yet seen may see, those who have not yet heard may hear, those who have not yet believed may believe, and those who have not yet realized may realize. Through this, we revive the ancient traditions that had been lost, and turn the sun of Buddhahood back to shine on conditioned arising. Right here and now, we can see the treasure hidden within us fully revealed, and the bright pearl inside our clothing clearly manifested.
Since it is so, then why is it still said that people use it daily but are unaware of it? It is because they cannot see the true face of this mountain, precisely because they are within this very mountain."
