Recorded Sayings of Chan Master Wenyin of Lingyin Monastery

Showing the Chan Practitioner Zhisheng

Since you have chosen the path of leaving home, you must dedicate yourself to the practice of meditation and strive to become an exceptional elder. Otherwise, you are merely a shaven-headed layperson—what use is that?

Now, while I was residing in Luoping for the summer retreat, a Chan practitioner named Zhisheng brought a scroll of paper, requesting a Dharma teaching from me. Let me ask you this: If wisdom is not inherent in nature, from where does sound arise?

If it is the sound of the primordial voice, what need is there for a tongue? If it is the sound of thunder, what need is there for a drum? If it is the sound of a zither, what need is there for fingers?

Now tell me: Where does the wondrous sound reside? Speak quickly, speak quickly!
