### 慧穎上座請

不讀孔孟書，便欲敲詩作賦；罔識祖師禪，偏能講性說心。七尺烏藤挑日月，一個虛懷空古今。或有時鬧市紅塵，吹無孔笛；或有時茅齋竹舍，撫沒絃琴。致令泥牛吼，石女吟，河為酪，地變金。是則是，猶欠一種慈悲。且那裏是欠慈悲處？寶劍橫飛光爍爍，野狐斬得血淋淋。

> Without studying the classics of Confucius and Mencius, yet one seeks to compose poetry and verse; ignorant of the ancestral Zen, yet one presumes to speak of nature and mind. With a seven-foot black cane, one lifts the sun and moon; with an empty heart, one embraces past and present. Sometimes amid the bustling markets and worldly dust, one blows a flute without holes; sometimes in a thatched hut among bamboo groves, one strums a zither without strings. This causes clay oxen to roar, stone maidens to sing, rivers to turn to curd, and earth to become gold. It is indeed so, yet there is still a lack of compassion. And where exactly is this lack of compassion? A sharp sword flies across, its light dazzling; a wild fox is cut down, its blood dripping.
