> The Elder Dahui preached the Dharma like clouds and rain, leaving behind thirty volumes of recorded sayings, preserved in the Dragon Treasury. Practitioners of meditation revere them as the River Chart and Heavenly Sphere. Upon opening his writings, it feels as though he is personally instructing us face-to-face. How many in the Transmission of the Lamp can claim such depth? I find it strange that his lineage has grown sparse, with no records in the Lamp Histories after the Jingci branch. Surely there must be those who silently attained awakening and carried on his true legacy, hidden in remote mountains and coastal retreats—like Xishan or Damei—yet I have not encountered them. This year, after the imperial examinations ended, I traveled from Xiaochang to Hanyin, then boarded a boat eastward, lodging temporarily at the Jiulian Monastery. Someone said to me: "There is a Chan master here who inherits the Dharma of Dahui. Do you know of this?" Startled, I replied: "How could such a thing be? Dahui lived five hundred years ago. How could there be a transmission now? Surely this must be mistaken? Or perhaps some extraordinary person, through studying Dahui's records, lost their eyebrows \[in deep contemplation\], drank from the source, and did not forget their origin, thus claiming distant succession—like the ancient pagoda master who inherited from Yunmen. This is possible, but uncertain." The next day, I went to Qingchuan and visited Woyun, asking for the monk Tongzhen, but he was absent. I only met a wandering monk and sat down to inquire. He answered: "It is no mistake, nor is it a distant succession. The true heir of Dahui has been hidden between the Liang and Min mountains, with an unbroken line for generations, with clear and certain evidence. This master is his descendant." I grew even more bewildered and asked in astonishment: "How could such a thing be? Dahui has been gone for five hundred years. Without records in the Lamp Histories, how can any transmission be verified?" All night I paced, unable to sleep. At dawn, I again went to Qingchuan and visited Woyun. Parting the curtain and opening the door, I found Elder Tongzhen welcoming me. His appearance was dignified and kind; his speech was orderly and articulate. Examining the succession of transmission, from Xichan Xu to Gushan Yong, to Jingci Ming, to Kuri Yi, to Fadu Ci, to Yiyan Xian, to Xiaoan Mi, to Eryang Qin, to Wunian You, to Jingshan Bao, to Tieniu Yuan, to Yueming Chi, to Chuwan Zhen, to Tiebi Ji—fifteen generations, verifiable and certain. Reading the records of his ancestors, I found them eloquent and structured, broad yet not scattered, expansive yet not excessive. Then I read his own teachings and exchange verses—they were open and free, refined within and wise without, with great waves of expression and vast insight. Truly, he is one who speaks the Dharma well, expounding in accord with the nature of reality. Could he be the reincarnation of Dahui? If not, how could he so closely resemble that ancestor? Alas! In the world today, those who inherit Linji are chiefly the Tiger Hill branch, which stands alone in China. Even the descendants of Duanqiao exist in name only, with no clear records to trace. How much less can the lineage of Grand Master Hui, after so long, avoid doubts and speculation? Now Elder Tongzhen stands at a critical juncture of continuity and rupture, walking in a time of renewal, reviving a heritage lost for a thousand years, sustaining a fragile lineage with the weight of a cauldron carried by a single thread. His position is as precarious as that of Touzi, as subtle as that of Fengxue. He must lift the collapsing tradition and forge a new path, clearing the overgrown forest to support the setting sun. How can I not place great hopes upon this master? Let his teachings be brought forth and proclaimed to the monastic world, so that the pageantry of Mount Jing's spirit tower is not forever buried beneath wild grass.
