### 小參

> Individual Instruction

小參。「參禪無別法，只要端正下手工夫，就明眼宗師討箇話頭，於話頭不明處猛著疑情，行也如是疑、住也如是疑、坐也如是疑、臥也如是疑，疑到妄想起時，自心警覺，知是妄想，亦不必去斷除他，但將本參話頭從舊清楚，切切提起，妄想自然消除，妄想即是話頭矣。又若時久昏沉，偶爾震惺，知是昏沉，亦不必去排遣他，但把本參話頭如舊，切切急提，昏沉自然解散，昏沉即是話頭矣。或時歷歷明明，見山是山、水是水、僧是僧、俗是俗；或時恍恍忽忽，見山非山、水非水、僧非僧、俗非俗。歷歷明明時勿作歡喜想、恍恍忽忽時勿作懊惱想，一味將箇話頭平平疑去，勿論寒暑、勿分歲月，遇好師友朝參暮請以決所疑，或云錯處即便改轍，印證是處拼死前往，一直做到飲不思飲、食不思食，行也行不得、坐也坐不得、瞌睡也瞌睡不得，癡癡獃獃，如箇有氣底死人一般。到恁麼時節，遇著箇白拈賊，把家事奪得竭竭盡盡，又復朝打三千、暮打八百，追取本命元辰，真到那求生不得、求死不得田地，忽爾穿衣摸著帶、洗面摸著鼻，纔曉自己眉毛不在他人面上，只得通身骨節粉碎，山河大地一切平沉，更有甚麼佛道當成、眾生一度？天上天下惟吾獨尊，所謂大疑大悟也。諸昆仲！有如是境界，方到山僧前喫棒有分。」

> Dharma talk for meditation. "There is no other method for Chan meditation—just set your work down correctly. Seek a \*huatou\* (key phrase) from a clear-eyed, recognized master. Focus your doubt intensely on wherever that \*huatou\* remains unclear. Be doubtful as you walk, doubtful as you stand, doubtful as you sit, doubtful as you lie down. "When distracting thoughts arise, recognize them in your own mind as distractions. There's no need to cut them off. Simply pick up the root \*huatou\* again from where it was clear, earnestly and urgently bring it to mind. Then distracting thoughts will naturally vanish—those distractions \*become\* the \*huatou\* itself. "Similarly, if you grow drowsy over time and occasionally jolt awake, recognize that as drowsiness. There's no need to push it away. Just take up the root \*huatou\* as before, urgently and intensely. Drowsiness will naturally dissolve—that drowsiness \*becomes\* the \*huatou\* itself. "At times you may see clearly: mountains are mountains, water is water, monks are monks, laypeople are laypeople. At other times you may be in a daze: mountains are not mountains, water is not water, monks are not monks, laypeople are not laypeople. When you see clearly, don't feel pleased. When you're in a daze, don't feel annoyed. Simply carry the \*huatou\* steadily with an attitude of doubt. Pay no mind to heat or cold, don't count the days or months. If you meet good teachers and friends, consult them morning and evening to resolve your doubt. If they say you've gone wrong, change course immediately. Where your understanding is confirmed, push forward even to the point of death. "Keep working until you don't think of drinking when thirsty, don't think of eating when hungry. You can't walk, can't sit, can't even fall asleep. You become stupid and dull, like a living corpse. At that point, if you encounter a 'white-handed thief' who steals everything you have down to the last scrap, and then takes you back, beating you three thousand times in the morning and eight hundred in the evening, pursuing the very root of your life and destiny—when you reach that state where you can neither live nor die, then suddenly, while putting on clothes you touch your belt, while washing your face you touch your nose, you'll realize that your own eyebrows are not on someone else's face. Your entire body's bones and joints will shatter, mountains, rivers, and the great earth will all collapse into stillness. What's left to achieve as Buddhahood? What beings are left to save? 'Above heaven, below heaven, I alone am the honored one.' This is what's called: great doubt, great awakening. "All of you fellow cultivators! Only when you reach such a state will you be qualified to come before this mountain monk and receive the stick."

小參。舉：「西堂智藏、百丈懷海、南泉普願侍馬祖翫月次，祖曰：『正恁麼時如何？』西堂云：『大好看經。』百丈云：『大好供養。』南泉拂袖便行。祖云：『經入藏，禪歸海，惟有普願獨超物外。』」師云：「唱和投機，還他馬師父子，向上關捩，未敢相許在。何故？荊棘林中下腳易，月明簾外轉身難。」

> \*\*Instruction for Contemplation\*\* Here is a case: When Xitang Zhicang, Baizhang Huaihai, and Nanquan Puyuan were accompanying their master Mazu to appreciate the moon, Mazu asked, "At this very moment, what is it?" Xitang said, "Perfect for studying the sutras." Baizhang said, "Perfect for making an offering." Nanquan simply shook his sleeves and walked away. Mazu commented, "The sutras enter the canon, Chan returns to the ocean, only Puyuan alone transcends all things." My comment: "When it comes to the repartee that hits the mark, I concede that to Master Ma and his sons. But when it comes to the ultimate barrier, I won't acknowledge them. Why? It's easy to set foot in a bramble patch, but hard to turn around outside a moonlit curtain."

小參。「『通玄峰頂，不是人間。心外無法，滿目青山。』韶國師恁麼道，只得一橛，總不似汝溪灘流流滴滴演盡無量妙義。或有箇漢出來道：『長老恁麼說話，也只得一橛。』卻許他具一隻眼。」

除夕，小參。「古語云：『我若有錢時，又肥又能白，無事街頭立，被人請作客，我要借十文，忙言與一百；我若無錢時，又瘦又能黑，無事街頭立，被人指作賊，我要借十文，一文借不得。』大眾！你看：有錢底是客、無錢底是賊，臘月三十日到來，更是寬假一毫不得。」
