### 10.怖軍

> 10\. Fearsome Army

般度的五個兒子和持國的一百個兒子住在象城，在歡樂中成長起來。般度的第二個兒子怖軍勇力超羣。他時常欺負持國的長子難敵和他的弟弟們，揪住他們的頭髮一頓亂打。他精於游泳，有時候挾住他們中的一個或幾個，跳進池塘，浸在水裏不出來，差一點沒把他們淹死。他們要是爬上了樹，他會站在樹底下使勁踢樹，叫他們像熟了的果子一樣跌落下來。怖軍這樣地作弄他們，使得他們身上永遠佈滿青一塊紫一塊的傷痕。因此，持國的兒子們從小就對怖軍懷着深刻的仇恨，也就不足為奇了。

> The five sons of Pandu and the hundred sons of Dhritarashtra lived in the city of elephants and grew up amid joy. Pandu's second son, Bhima, was unmatched in strength and courage. He often bullied Dhritarashtra's eldest son, Duryodhana, and his brothers, grabbing them by the hair and beating them without mercy. He was an excellent swimmer, and sometimes he would seize one or several of them, leap into a pond, and stay under the water so long that he nearly drowned them. If they climbed a tree, he would stand at the base and kick the trunk with all his might, making them tumble down like ripe fruit. Bhima's constant torment left their bodies forever covered with bruises. It is no wonder, then, that Dhritarashtra's sons harbored a deep hatred for Bhima from childhood.

王子們漸漸長大，慈憫大師教他們練武藝，射箭，以及王子們該學的別的本領。難敵妒忌怖軍，心地變壞了，做出很多不正當的事來。

> As the princes grew up, Master Compassion taught them martial arts, archery, and all the other skills a prince should learn. But Duryodhana grew jealous of Bhima, and his heart turned wicked, leading him to do many dishonest things.

難敵心裏很不痛快，因為自己的父親是瞎子，王位由叔叔般度承襲，般度一死，太子堅戰就要登基為王。他認為瞎子父親懦弱無能，必須自己來阻止堅戰登位，就設法謀害怖軍。他用種種辦法來實現自己的决定，以為怖軍一死，般度族的勢力就會隨之衰落。

> Duryodhana was deeply unhappy. His own father was blind, so the throne had passed to his uncle Pandu. Now that Pandu was dead, the crown prince Yudhishthira was about to be crowned king. He believed his blind father was weak and incompetent, and that he himself had to stop Yudhishthira from taking the throne. So he set out to murder Bhima. He tried every possible means to carry out his plan, thinking that once Bhima was dead, the power of the Pandava clan would decline along with him.

難敵兄弟計劃把怖軍投入恆河，把阿周那和堅戰禁閉起來，然後奪取王位。難敵於是帶着弟弟和般度五子去恆河游泳。游泳畢，大家都很疲倦，就在帳篷裏躺下睡覺。怖軍體力消耗得更多，何况他的食物裏又是下過毒的，就昏昏沉沉在恆河岸上倒下了。難敵於是把他用野藤捆綁起來，拋入河中。難敵這壞蛋早就在河裏插上了一些尖銳的鐵釘子，想使怖軍一掉下去就給釘子扎死。幸而怖軍掉下去的地方恰好沒有釘子，水裏的毒蛇雖咬了他，但毒蛇的毒液剛好和他吃下去的毒藥以毒攻毒兩相抵消，怖軍依然安全無恙。後來河水又把他冲上了岸。

> Duryodhana and his brothers planned to throw Bhima into the Ganges, lock up Arjuna and Yudhishthira, and then seize the throne. So Duryodhana took his brothers and the five Pandava brothers to swim in the Ganges. After swimming, everyone was very tired and lay down to sleep in the tents. Bhima had used up more energy, and besides, his food had been poisoned, so he lay on the bank of the Ganges in a daze. Duryodhana then tied him up with wild vines and threw him into the river. This villain Duryodhana had already planted sharp iron spikes in the river, hoping that Bhima would be pierced to death by the spikes as soon as he fell in. Fortunately, the place where Bhima fell happened to have no spikes. Although the venomous snakes in the water bit him, the snake venom happened to counteract the poison he had swallowed, and Bhima remained safe and sound. Later, the river washed him back onto the shore.

難敵認為水裏既滿佈釘子，又有那末多毒蛇，怖軍必死無疑，就興高采烈地帶着其他的人回城了。

堅戰問怖軍哪兒去了，難敵告訴他說，已早回城了。堅戰信以為真。他回到家裏，便急忙問母親，母親却回答說還沒有回來。堅戰於是懷疑怖軍遭到暗算，便帶領弟弟回到森林，四處找尋，可是哪兒也找不到，他們只好垂頭喪氣，萬分傷心地回家。

後來怖軍醒了。他拖着沉重的步子狼狽地回到家裏。貢蒂和堅戰喜出望外，趕緊迎接他，擁抱他。怖軍的身子中過了毒，反而比從前更加強壯了。

貢蒂把維杜羅請來，暗地告訴他說：「難敵這孩子又壞又殘酷，他想殺死怖軍，謀取王位，我十分擔憂。」

維杜羅回答：「你說得對，可是這想法千萬別讓人知道。如果難敵這壞小子受了責備，他會更加恨你們。好在你的兒子都注定長壽，你不必擔憂。」

堅戰也警告怖軍說：「這事兒別張揚出去。從此以後我們要小心謹慎，互相幫助，保護自己。」

難敵見到怖軍居然活着回來，大為吃驚。他的妒忌和仇恨更加深了。他長嘆一聲，煩惱不已。
