> Stage 1: The First Ground

> If a great Bodhisattva, dwelling in a hundred Buddha realms, takes the form of a universal monarch over the entire southern continent, cultivates the hundred gates of clear wisdom, and through the perfection of generosity, maintains an equanimous mind, guiding all beings throughout the four continents—

> This section explains how a bodhisattva at the first stage should teach and transform sentient beings. "Dwelling in a hundred Buddha-lands" means that upon reaching the first stage, a bodhisattva can manifest bodies in a hundred Buddha realms, drawing near to a hundred Buddhas and the great bodhisattvas within those hundred Buddha-lands. One Buddha-land is one great trichiliocosm—that is, a universe of a thousand million worlds. This bodhisattva is able to abide in a hundred such vast universes. The phrase "as ruler of Jambudvīpa" indicates that within each Buddha-land there are a hundred billion four-continent systems. A bodhisattva at this stage is born in the southern continent of Jambudvīpa as a wheel-turning sage king, guiding and transforming beings throughout the four continents. "Sage" means that inwardly possessing surpassing virtue and outwardly appearing as a benevolent king, such a one is honored by all beings in the four continents and is therefore called a sage king. Endowed with the seven treasures, this king can send forth his precious wheel to roam freely across the four continents without obstruction—hence the name "wheel-turning" monarch. "Cultivating the gate of a hundred illuminations" reveals what the bodhisattva practices. Upon seeing a single Buddha, one realizes a hundred dharmas; or within each single dharma, a hundred dharmas are contained. Understanding that even one dharma encompasses a hundred dharmas is like the Avatamsaka Sutra's teaching that whatever single dharma is raised, it immediately contains ten such aspects. The line on the perfection of generosity reveals the bodhisattva's practice in giving. The perfection of generosity means the ultimate fulfillment of giving—through the gift of material things and the gift of the Dharma, the bodhisattva broadly benefits all sentient beings throughout a hundred Buddha-lands. Thus it is said that this bodhisattva dwells in a mind of perfect equanimity. "Transforming the four continents" means that within each land manifested by a bodily transformation, the bodhisattva guides beings through the ten wholesome deeds.
