> Chapter 3: All Names Like Echoes

> Good man! All names are merely conventional labels. Before the Buddha appeared in the world, the illusory phenomena of worldly truth had no names, no meanings, no inherent substance or characteristics—no names for the three realms, no terms for good and evil retribution, or the six paths of rebirth. When the Buddhas appear, for the sake of sentient beings, they teach countless names for the three realms, the six paths, and purity and defilement. Yet all these are like echoes—mere sounds with no real existence.

> Names serve as expressions, and a single name is simply a designation. However, names cannot convey the intrinsic nature of all phenomena; what they express is merely their general characteristics. For instance, when we say the word "fire," it only points to the common concept of fire, not to fire's true essence. If the essence of fire were fully captured by its name, then speaking of fire would burn the mouth, and thinking of fire would burn the mind. Why? Because fire's nature is heat, and its function is burning. What a name conveys is merely the conventional understanding shared by people's minds—it cannot be established based on ultimate reality, so it is all said to be provisionally designated. Before the Buddha appeared in the world to teach, all conventional truths had no names, meanings, or forms, nor were there concepts such as the three realms or six paths of rebirth. When the Buddha came forth to liberate sentient beings, he established these designations through his skillful wisdom. This is like a person standing in the mountains and loudly calling out a name—the echo responds with the same name. Such names have sound but no inherent meaning.
