> Second Ground Characteristics

> The passage from "The Four Immeasurable Minds" to "cutting off habits such as anger" clarifies the characteristics of entering the grounds. This bodhisattva, because of cultivating the perfection of moral discipline, has pure precepts, and body and mind are tranquil and extinct. The most supreme tranquility and extinction refers to the true thusness that is realized. "Cutting off habits such as anger" means severing the subtle habits of anger, revealing what is abandoned upon entering the grounds. The passage from "cultivating all practices" to "present before the mind at every moment" clarifies the characteristics of abiding in the grounds. "All practices" refers to the ten wholesome actions. Refraining from killing means that both the intention and the conditions for killing are cut off, which is the ultimate practice of not killing. Not taking what is not given means that one's merit and virtue are fulfilled, with no personal needs, which is the ultimate practice of not stealing. The mind without defiling desires is the ultimate practice of not committing sexual misconduct. Attaining truthful speech means being truly free from false speech. Attaining harmonious speech means being truly free from divisive speech. Attaining gentle speech means being truly free from harsh words. Attaining disciplined speech means being truly free from idle chatter. Always practicing the mind of equanimity is the ultimate absence of greed. Always arousing a mind of loving-kindness is the ultimate absence of anger. Abiding in an upright mind is the ultimate absence of ignorance. The four phrases "tranquil, pure, and wholly good" praise the characteristics of abiding in the grounds, ultimately free from faults, as can be understood from the text. The passage from "over five incalculable eons" to "eternally departing from all defilements" clarifies the characteristics of emerging from the grounds. "Five incalculable eons" means adding one to the previous number of eons. "Resolute and brave" means that the bodhisattva's fundamental resolve, which is to remove evil and return to goodness, arises from the roots and strengths, and as one is about to leave the previous stage and advance further, one therefore becomes brave.
