> Chapter 13: The Characteristics of the Three Stages

> Furthermore, the great enlightening beings on the stage of Radiant Light abide in non-discrimination, extinguishing the darkness of ignorance. Through patience with signlessness, they attain the three insights, fully understanding that the past, present, and future have neither coming nor going. Relying on the four states of meditative absorption and the four formless concentrations, they follow in sequence the wisdom of non-discrimination. Endowed with supreme meditative mastery, they obtain the five superknowledges: appearing large or small, appearing or vanishing at will; the pure celestial eye sees all realms of existence; the pure celestial ear hears all sounds; through knowledge of others' minds, they know the thoughts of all beings; and they perceive the immeasurable distinctions of past lives. For six immeasurable aeons, they practice all forms of patience and perfection, attaining great mastery and bringing benefit and ease to all.

> This explains the characteristics of the third ground, which corresponds to the upper level of faith-based patience within the stage of faith-based patience, and is the sixth of the thirteen types of Dharma teachers. Within this, there are three aspects, as before. The two lines about abiding in non-discrimination describe the entry into this ground. "Abiding in non-discrimination" reveals the wisdom that enables entry and the ultimate reality that is realized. "Extinguishing the darkness of ignorance" indicates what is overcome upon entering this ground, which is the complete eradication of delusion. The passage from "in patience regarding signlessness" to "countless distinctions" describes the practice within this ground. Through patience regarding signlessness, one attains the three insights, all as explained before—namely, observing that all phenomena are signless and firmly accepting this, thereby gaining the three insights, through which one understands that the flow of the three times is illusory and devoid of fixed characteristics. The four lines beginning with "based on the four meditations" indicate that, relying on the four concentrations and eight absorptions, one cultivates the Great Vehicle radiant concentration, which is constantly in harmony with non-discriminating wisdom, while that wisdom likewise always accords with these four concentrations and eight absorptions. The two lines about possessing supreme concentration describe the attainment of the five superknowledges; "supreme concentration" refers to the eight absorptions mentioned above. Through this concentration, one gains the five superknowledges. What are the states of these five superknowledges? That is, appearing in bodies, appearing in realms, and freely manifesting or concealing, etc. The names of the five superknowledges are as the text states. "Past abodes" refers to the wisdom of past lives. The passage from "over six incalculable eons" to "benefit and bring happiness" reveals the characteristics of completing practice and emerging from this ground. Bodhisattvas on this ground cultivate the perfection of patience, and all aspects of patience are fully accomplished. "Great totality" refers to the dharani, meaning the attainment of the patience dharani.
