### 乙二　密咒發願

> Section 2: Secret Mantra and Vow

故說般若波羅密多咒，即說咒曰：揭諦揭諦，波羅揭諦，波羅僧揭諦，菩提娑婆訶。

> Therefore, the mantra of Prajnaparamita is spoken. The mantra goes: Gate gate, paragate, parasamgate, bodhi svaha.

> The meaning of mantra is vast—if explained in full, every word and phrase contains infinite significance. The true nature of all phenomena is profound and secret, comprehensible only between Buddhas. Simply reciting with sincere devotion brings response. However, we can offer a basic explanation from simpler terms. What is called a mantra is placing one's intention into words, focusing the mind and expressing it as sound for prayer and blessing. Thus, one can curse for harm or bless for good. For example, directing malicious thoughts toward an enemy to cause illness or death is also called a mantra. Praying for auspiciousness or a peaceful rebirth is called a vow of blessing. This mantra here is the spell-dharani among the four types of dharani—it is the condensed essence that gathers all the meaning and merit of the entire sutra.

> Gate, gate means crossing beyond all suffering—the repeated gate means crossing oneself and also crossing others. How can this crossing be accomplished? Through the merit of Prajñā wisdom. Pāramitā means reaching the other shore, so gate pāramitā means crossing to the other shore. Sam, or saṃgha, means the community or the many; gate pāramitā saṃ means crossing the multitude to the other shore. Bodhi means supreme perfect enlightenment. The word mantra is a condensed symbol, using one or two syllables to represent the whole phrase. Svāhā means swift and complete accomplishment. In sequential translation, the mantra becomes: Cross, cross, cross to the other shore, cross to the other shore, cross the multitude to the other shore, swiftly accomplish supreme perfect enlightenment. This follows Sanskrit grammatical order. Rendered in Chinese word order, it reads: Cross and cross again, cross to the other shore, cross the multitude to the other shore, swiftly accomplish supreme perfect enlightenment. Thus, reciting this mantra is equivalent to reciting the vow to awaken, and also to dedicating the merit after reciting the sutra, wishing that self and others may swiftly attain enlightenment.
