### 辛一　初二偈就前後破

> Part 1: Two Verses on Before and After

答曰：若謂是生生，還能生本生，生生從本生，何能生本生？若謂生生能生本生，本生不生生生，生生何能生本生？若謂是本生，能生彼生生，本生從彼生，何能生生生？若謂本生能生生生，生生生已還生本生，是事不然。何以故？生生法應生本生，是故名生生，而本生實自未生，云何能生生生？

> Reply: If arising itself could give rise to the original arising, yet arising itself comes from the original arising—how could it give rise to that original? If arising itself were said to produce the original arising, the original arising does not produce arising itself; so how could arising itself produce the original arising? If the original arising could produce arising itself, yet the original arises from arising itself—how could it produce arising itself? If the original arising could give rise to arising itself, and arising itself, once arisen, then produces the original arising—this is not so. Why? Because what is called "arising" is meant to produce the original arising, so it is called arising; but if the original arising is truly not yet arisen, how could it produce arising itself?

初二偈，謂第四偈及第五偈。就前後，謂就生生與本生生起之前後。第四偈謂：先有本生，後方有所生之生生，若本生未生「生生」，「生生」何能生本生耶？是以生生不能生本生也。第五偈謂：本生須從「生生」而生，今「生生」未生本生時，何有本生能生「生生」耶？是以本生不能生「生生」也。

> The second pair of verses refers to the fourth and fifth verses. Concerning the sequence: it is about the order in which the arising-arises and the original arising come into being. The fourth verse says: First there is the original arising, and only afterward does the arising-arises come to be. If the original arising has not yet given rise to the arising-arises, how could the arising-arises give rise to the original arising? Therefore, the arising-arises cannot produce the original arising. The fifth verse says: The original arising must come from the arising-arises. Now, when the arising-arises has not yet produced the original arising, how could there be an original arising to produce the arising-arises? Therefore, the original arising cannot produce the arising-arises either.
