> Section 3: Verses on the Cause

> Furthermore, the internal seeds—these are what give rise to and draw forth \[results\], as should be understood. Their withering and loss come from what they draw forth, for they naturally perish afterward.

> Although the text lists two kinds of causes, the "arising cause" has already been explained in detail above. To prevent anyone from clinging to the idea that only the arising cause exists, the text introduces the second cause, making clear that there is also a "leading cause." The leading cause refers to a cause that, across a gap or interval, has the power to draw forth a distant and residual effect—unlike the arising cause, which directly and immediately produces a proximate and primary result.

> There are two kinds of seeds—external and internal—and each has two types of causes: one that directly produces and one that draws out or extends. You should understand that they do not rely solely on the producing cause. What is the example? Consider the withered straw and firewood that remain after external seeds have produced their result, or the corpse that remains after internal seeds have produced theirs. If only the producing cause existed, then after grain is cut, there would be no grain seeds or straw left; after a person dies, there would be no bones or remains. The fact that these two do not vanish instantly is because the remaining power of the seeds acts as a drawing-out cause, allowing the produced form to gradually exhaust itself over time. Therefore, you should know that both external and internal seeds have the function of acting as drawing-out causes that lead to long-lasting after-effects. The results of this drawing-out cause have three characteristics: first, they do not vanish immediately; second, they do not require another force to eliminate them; third, they do not generate new results. The gradual natural disappearance can be illustrated with an analogy. It is like shooting an arrow: the force of the bowstring is the producing cause for the arrow leaving the bow, while the momentum that carries it moment by moment to its target and then lets it fall is the drawing-out cause. The meaning of external and internal seeds can be understood in the same way.
