The Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch (Huineng's Original Version)

At the beginning of the Tang dynasty, the Master first came from the South Sea to Caoxi. Wei Qu, the prefect of Shaozhou, and others invited him to the lecture hall of Dafan Temple, where he opened the conditions for the assembly, conferred the Formless Precepts, and taught the Maha Prajna Paramita Dharma.

The Master taught the sudden teaching that day—directly realizing one's own nature without hindrance. He addressed monks and laypeople alike, so that at his very words each might awaken to their original mind and attain the Buddha's path right where they stood.

More than a thousand monks, nuns, laymen and laywomen were seated beneath the throne. Over thirty officials, including the Prefect, and over thirty Confucian scholars and learned gentlemen all together requested that the Great Master expound this Dharma teaching.

The Prefect Wei Qu instructed his disciple Fahai to write it down and circulate it, so that it could be passed on to later generations.

If one receives and upholds this essential teaching, students of the Path can pass it down to one another in instruction, and thus have something to rely upon.
