The Vimalakīrti Nirdeśa Sūtra is an important Mahāyāna Buddhist scripture, translated into Chinese by Kumārajīva during the Hongshi era of the Later Qin dynasty (401–413 CE). This sutra centers on the profound dialogue between the layman Vimalakīrti and the bodhisattva Mañjuśrī, expounding Mahāyāna teachings such as the nondual Dharma gate and the conduct of bodhisattvas. It emphasizes that lay practitioners can equally attain Buddhahood. In the sutra, Vimalakīrti manifests an appearance of illness, prompting the Buddha to send bodhisattvas and disciples to inquire after him. Through exchanges of wisdom, the truth of emptiness is revealed. This scripture has exerted a profound influence in the history of Chinese Buddhism, particularly esteemed by the Chan school. Its teachings have deeply shaped the tradition of lay Buddhist practice in China and are honored as one of the treasured classics of Mahāyāna Buddhism.

Chapter 1: The Buddha Land

This is what I have heard:

At one time, the Buddha was in the Amra Grove of Vaishali, accompanied by eight thousand great bhikkhus and thirty-two thousand bodhisattvas. These were all well-known and recognized beings, accomplished in great wisdom and fundamental practices. They were established by the majestic power of the buddhas, serving as guardians of the Dharma fortress, upholding the true Dharma. They could roar like lions, their renown spreading throughout the ten directions. Without being asked, they befriended and comforted people. They carried forward the Three Jewels, ensuring their continuity. They subdued demonic adversaries and restrained non-Buddhist paths, having already purified themselves and forever abandoned the veils and entanglements. Their minds constantly abided in unobstructed liberation. Mindfulness, concentration, retention, and eloquence were unbroken. They were fully endowed with generosity, discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, wisdom, skillful means, and power. They had attained the patient acceptance of the non-arising of dharmas, having gained nothing to attain. They were already able to follow and turn the irreversible wheel. They skillfully understood the characteristics of dharmas and knew the faculties of sentient beings. They covered the great assembly with fearlessness, merit, and wisdom, thereby cultivating their minds. Their magnificent forms adorned their bodies, their appearances foremost, having relinquished all worldly adornments. Their fame was lofty and far-reaching, surpassing Mount Sumeru. Their profound faith was firm, like a vajra. The jewel of the Dharma shone everywhere, raining down sweet dew. Among all voices, theirs were subtle and supreme. They deeply penetrated dependent origination, cut off all wrong views, and were free from the two extremes of existence and non-existence, with no remaining habitual tendencies. They expounded the Dharma fearlessly, like a lion's roar. Their discourses were like thunder, immeasurable, having transcended measure. They gathered the treasures of the Dharma like a sea captain, thoroughly understanding the profound and wondrous meaning of all dharmas. They skillfully knew the destinations to which sentient beings go and the activities of their minds. They approached the peerless, unsurpassed buddha wisdom of sovereign mastery, the ten powers, the fearlessnesses, and the eighteen unique qualities. They closed the doors to all evil destinies, yet manifested their bodies within the five paths of existence. They were like great physician kings, skillfully healing all illnesses, prescribing medicine according to the disease, enabling beings to take and practice it. All immeasurable merits were accomplished; all immeasurable buddha-lands were purified and adorned. Those who saw or heard them all received benefit; nothing they did was in vain. All such merits were fully complete.

In total, there were thirty-two thousand such bodhisattvas.

There were also ten thousand great Brahma kings, including Shikhi, who came from other worlds to hear the Buddha teach. Twelve thousand heavenly emperors also came from other worlds to join the assembly. Other powerful deities, dragon spirits, celestial musicians, demi-gods, garudas, kimnaras, mahoragas, and the like all came to sit in the assembly. Monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen also all came to sit there. At that time, the Buddha was surrounded and honored by countless hundreds of thousands of beings, as he taught them the Dharma. He sat on a lion's throne adorned with jewels, and he towered over the entire great assembly like the king of Mount Sumeru rising above the great ocean.

At that time, in the city of Vaishali, there was a wealthy elder’s son named Ratnakūṭa (Treasure-Heap). Together with five hundred other sons of wealthy elders, each holding a precious seven-jeweled canopy, they came to the Buddha’s presence. They bowed their heads at the Buddha’s feet and offered their canopies in homage.

Through the Buddha’s majestic spiritual power, all the jeweled canopies merged into a single canopy, covering the entire trichiliocosm. The vast expanse of this world appeared fully within it. Moreover, all the mountains of this great trichiliocosm—Sumeru, Snow Mountains, Mucilinda, Great Mucilinda, Fragrant Mountain, Jewel Mountain, Gold Mountain, Black Mountain, Iron Ring Mountain, and Great Iron Ring Mountain—along with the great seas, rivers, streams, springs, the sun, moon, stars, heavenly palaces, dragon palaces, and the palaces of all honored deities—all appeared within that jeweled canopy. Furthermore, all the Buddhas of the ten directions and their teachings also appeared within that jeweled canopy.

At that moment, the entire assembly, witnessing the Buddha’s miraculous power, exclaimed that they had never seen such a marvel! With palms joined, they bowed to the Buddha, gazing up at his venerable countenance without blinking or turning away for even an instant.

Then the elder’s son Ratnakūṭa, standing before the Buddha, recited a verse in praise:

各見世尊在其前,斯則神力不共法;
皆謂世尊同其語,斯則神力不共法;
普得受行獲其利,斯則神力不共法;

"His eyes are pure and wide, like blue lotus flowers; His mind is pure, having penetrated all states of meditative absorption. Long has He cultivated pure karma, known as the Immeasurable; He guides all beings to stillness, and so I bow to Him.

Having seen the Great Sage's miraculous power, Which manifests throughout countless lands in the ten directions, Where all Buddhas teach the Dharma, All beings see and hear it completely.

The Dharma King's power surpasses all beings; He constantly bestows the wealth of Dharma upon everyone. He can clearly distinguish all phenomena, Yet is immovable in the Ultimate Truth. He has mastered all things, And so I bow to this Dharma King.

In His teaching, there is neither existence nor non-existence; All things arise due to causes and conditions. There is no self, no creator, no one who experiences, Yet the results of good and evil deeds never disappear.

At the foot of the Bodhi tree, He conquered Mara with His power; He attained the nectar of liberation and realized the path of awakening. Free from mental activity and conditioned doing, He completely vanquished all heretics.

Three times He turned the Wheel of Dharma throughout the cosmos. That wheel is by nature always pure. Celestial and human beings attained the path as evidence: The Three Jewels thus appeared in the world.

With this wondrous Dharma, He rescues all beings; Once received, one never regresses and abides in perpetual peace. He is the Great Physician who conquers aging, sickness, and death; I should pay homage to the ocean of Dharma, whose virtues are boundless.

He remains unmoved by praise or blame, like Mount Sumeru; He treats both good and evil with equal compassion. His mind acts impartially, like empty space. Who hears of such a jewel among humans and does not respectfully honor Him?

Now I offer this small canopy to the World-Honored One, Within which appears my three-thousandfold world— The palaces of all gods, dragons, spirits, Gandharvas, yakshas, and the rest.

All beings see everything in the world; The Ten-Powered One compassionately manifests this miraculous transformation. Witnessing such a rarity, all praise the Buddha; Now I bow to the Lord of the Three Realms.

The Great Sage, the Dharma King, is the refuge of all. With pure minds, they gaze upon the Buddha, and all are delighted. Each sees the World-Honored One right before them— This is His unique, incomparable power.

The Buddha teaches with a single voice, Yet beings each understand according to their own kind. All think the World-Honored One speaks their own language— This is His unique, incomparable power.

The Buddha teaches with a single voice, Yet beings each interpret it according to their own understanding. They all receive and practice it, reaping its benefits— This is His unique, incomparable power.

The Buddha teaches with a single voice, Some feel fear, others joy; Some grow disillusioned, others have their doubts cut away— This is His unique, incomparable power.

I bow to the Ten-Powered One of great diligence; I bow to the One who has attained fearlessness. I bow to the One who abides in unique qualities; I bow to the Supreme Teacher of all. I bow to the One who severs all bonds; I bow to the One who has reached the Other Shore. I bow to the One who guides all worlds across; I bow to the One who has forever left the cycle of birth and death.

He thoroughly knows the coming and going of all beings; He skillfully attains liberation through all phenomena. Unattached to the world, like a lotus flower, He always enters the practice of emptiness and stillness. He comprehends the nature of all things without obstruction— I bow to the One who is like empty space, without any support."

Then the elder's son, Bao Ji, having spoken these verses, said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One, these five hundred elders' sons have all awakened the mind of Supreme Perfect Enlightenment. They wish to hear about the purification of a Buddha's land. Please, World-Honored One, teach the practices that purify a Bodhisattva's land."

The Buddha said, “Excellent, Ratnakuta! It is wonderful that you would ask the Tathagata about the pure land practice for the sake of all bodhisattvas. Listen carefully, listen carefully, and reflect well upon it. I will explain it for you.” Then Ratnakuta and the five hundred sons of wealthy elders received the teaching and listened.

The Buddha said, "Precious Accumulation, sentient beings are the Buddha-field of a bodhisattva. Why is this? A bodhisattva attains a Buddha-field by guiding sentient beings to transformation; attains a Buddha-field by taming sentient beings; attains a Buddha-field by leading sentient beings to enter the Buddha's wisdom through a suitable land; attains a Buddha-field by helping sentient beings awaken the roots of bodhisattvahood through a suitable land. Why is this? A bodhisattva seeks a pure land solely for the benefit of all sentient beings. It is like someone who wants to build a palace on open ground—they can do so freely without obstruction. But if they try to build it in empty space, they will never succeed. Likewise, a bodhisattva takes on a Buddha-land for the purpose of helping sentient beings. Taking on a Buddha-land is not about building on emptiness."

"Baoji, you should know this: An honest heart is the Buddha's pure land—when a Bodhisattva attains Buddhahood, beings without deceit are born in that land.

A sincere, deep heart is the Buddha's pure land—when a Bodhisattva attains Buddhahood, beings with full virtue are born in that land.

The awakened mind (Bodhicitta) is the Buddha's pure land—when a Bodhisattva attains Buddhahood, beings of the Great Vehicle are born in that land.

Generosity is the Buddha's pure land—when a Bodhisattva attains Buddhahood, beings who can give up everything are born in that land.

Keeping precepts is the Buddha's pure land—when a Bodhisattva attains Buddhahood, beings who practice the ten good deeds and fulfill their vows are born in that land.

Patience is the Buddha's pure land—when a Bodhisattva attains Buddhahood, beings adorned with the thirty-two marks of a great being are born in that land.

Diligence is the Buddha's pure land—when a Bodhisattva attains Buddhahood, beings who earnestly cultivate all virtues are born in that land.

Meditation is the Buddha's pure land—when a Bodhisattva attains Buddhahood, beings with a focused, undisturbed mind are born in that land.

Wisdom is the Buddha's pure land—when a Bodhisattva attains Buddhahood, beings with right understanding are born in that land.

The four boundless states of mind are the Buddha's pure land—when a Bodhisattva attains Buddhahood, beings who embody loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity are born in that land.

The four methods of attraction are the Buddha's pure land—when a Bodhisattva attains Buddhahood, beings who are helped toward liberation through these methods are born in that land.

Skillful means is the Buddha's pure land—when a Bodhisattva attains Buddhahood, beings who are free and unhindered in all methods are born in that land.

The thirty-seven factors of enlightenment are the Buddha's pure land—when a Bodhisattva attains Buddhahood, beings who master the four foundations of mindfulness, the four right efforts, the four bases of spiritual power, the five roots, the five powers, the seven factors of enlightenment, and the eightfold path are born in that land.

Dedication of merit is the Buddha's pure land—when a Bodhisattva attains Buddhahood, they attain a land fully endowed with all virtues.

Teaching to remove the eight difficulties is the Buddha's pure land—when a Bodhisattva attains Buddhahood, their land has no three lower realms or eight difficulties.

Observing one's own precepts and not criticizing others' faults is the Buddha's pure land—when a Bodhisattva attains Buddhahood, their land has no mention of breaking rules.

The ten good deeds are the Buddha's pure land—when a Bodhisattva attains Buddhahood, beings are born in that land whose lives are long and not cut short, who are wealthy, who practice chastity, who speak truthfully, who always use gentle words, whose families are harmonious without disputes, whose words always bring benefit, who are free from envy and anger, and who hold right views."

"Thus, Ratnakuta, when a bodhisattva possesses an upright mind, they can put it into action. With such action, they develop a profound mind. With a profound mind, their intentions become tamed. With tamed intentions, they act as they speak. Acting as they speak, they can dedicate merit. With dedication, they gain skillful means. With skillful means, they can help beings attain fulfillment. By helping beings attain fulfillment, the Buddha-land becomes pure. As the Buddha-land becomes pure, the teaching becomes pure. As the teaching becomes pure, wisdom becomes pure. As wisdom becomes pure, the mind becomes pure. As the mind becomes pure, all merits become pure.

Therefore, Ratnakuta, if a bodhisattva wishes to attain a pure land, they should purify their own mind. When the mind is pure, the Buddha-land is pure."

At that time, Shariputra, empowered by the Buddha's spiritual influence, had this thought: "If a pure mind leads to a pure Buddha land, then when our Blessed One was still a bodhisattva, could his intention have been impure? Yet why is this Buddha land so impure?"

The Buddha, knowing their thoughts, immediately said: "What do you think—are not the sun and moon perfectly clear by nature? And yet, how can a blind person see them?"

Answered: "No, World-Honored One. The fault lies with the blind person, not with the sun or moon."

"Shariputra, it is due to the karmic obstructions of sentient beings that they cannot see the pure and majestic perfection of the Tathāgata's Buddha-land. This is not the Tathāgata's fault. Shariputra, my land here is pure, but you simply cannot see it."

Then the coiled-hair Brahma King said to Shariputra, "Do not form the idea that this Buddha land is impure. Why is that? Because I see the land of Shakyamuni Buddha as pure and clear, like the palace of the Self-Mastering Heaven."

Shariputra said, "I see this land filled with hills, pits, thorns, gravel, earth, stone mountains, and all kinds of filth and ugliness."

The Brahma King with the Topknot said: "Noble one, your mind makes distinctions between high and low, and does not rely on the Buddha's wisdom—that is why you see this land as impure. Shariputra, a bodhisattva regards all beings as equal, has a deeply pure heart, and relies on the Buddha's wisdom; only then can they see that this buddha-land is pure."

Then the Buddha pressed the ground with his toe. In that very moment, the entire universe of three thousand worlds appeared adorned with countless treasures—hundreds and thousands of precious jewels—just like the land of the Jewel-Adorned Buddha, a realm filled with infinite virtue and splendor. The entire assembly, amazed, exclaimed that such a sight had never been seen before, and each person saw themselves seated upon a jeweled lotus flower. The Buddha said to Shariputra, "Now look—is this Buddha-land pure and magnificent?"

Shariputra said, "Indeed, World-Honored One! What has never been seen before, what has never been heard before—now the Buddha's land appears in all its majesty and purity."

The Buddha said to Shariputra, "My Buddha land is always as pure as this. It is only because I wish to save those of inferior nature that I show it as filled with evils and impurities. For example, when the gods eat from the same jeweled vessel, the color of the food differs according to their merit. In the same way, Shariputra, if a person's mind is pure, they will see this land adorned with blessings and virtues."

When the Buddha revealed the purity and splendor of his land, the five hundred sons of elders led by Jewel Accumulation all attained the patient acceptance of the truth that no phenomena arise. Eighty-four thousand people awakened the mind set on supreme, perfect enlightenment. The Buddha withdrew his miraculous power, and the world returned to its ordinary state. Among the thirty-two thousand gods and humans who were seeking the Lesser Vehicle, they recognized that all conditioned things are impermanent, cleared away defilements, and attained the pure Dharma-eye. Eight thousand monks, no longer clinging to any phenomena, gained freedom through the end of all mental outflows.
