Chapter 56: The Chapter on Vigilance

The chapter on Vigilance and Caution teaches us to follow the path of goodness, to avoid wrongdoing, and to live without regret.

Those who remain clear-minded, Uphold the precepts to the very end, And diligently cultivate good actions— Such is the perfection of moral discipline.

The wise guard their precepts, And through this merit attain the Three Jewels. They gain good reputation and benefit, And later enjoy heavenly bliss.

Those who always perceive the Dharma, Protect their precepts as a bright light, And achieve true insight— They are auspicious among their peers.

The precept-holder lives in peace, Freeing the body from distress. Sleeping soundly at night, They wake with lasting joy.

Cultivate morality and give with care, Perform good deeds as a source of merit. From here, passing onward, They always reach a place of peace.

What is good in the end? What good offers a secure abode? What is the true treasure of a person? What cannot be stolen by thieves?

The precepts bring peace in old age, Good conduct provides a secure abode, Wisdom is a person's treasure, And merit cannot be stolen away.

A monk establishes moral discipline, Guarding the senses with care, Eating with mindful moderation, And aligning thought with the path.

Through precepts, the mind is tamed; Through guarding awareness, right stillness is found. Within, they cultivate right observation, Never forgetting right understanding.

The wise guard their moral discipline, Reflecting within with true wisdom. They walk the path in proper accordance, And cleanse themselves of suffering.

They remove all defilements, Abandon pride so it does not arise. Throughout life they seek the Dharma, Never straying from the noble ones even for a moment.

Morality, concentration, and liberating wisdom— These should be carefully contemplated. Having shed all impurities, They are free from misfortune and release all clinging.

Through understanding, they cross beyond; No further rebirth remains. They transcend all realms of temptation, Clear and radiant as the sun.

The deluded indulge their whims, But the wise constantly keep their distance, Cultivating morality, concentration, and wisdom, Striving for completeness without turning away.

Holding precepts with purity, The mind does not indulge itself. With right wisdom already liberated, They no longer see the paths of error.

This leads to an auspicious place— The unsurpassed path. They also abandon wrong ways, And leave all realms of temptation behind.
