### 刀杖品法句經第十八十有四章

> The Chapter on the Rod and the Staff, from the Dharmapada Sutra, Chapter 10, with 18 verses

刀杖品者，教習慈仁，無行刀杖賊害眾生。

> The Chapter on Weapons: Teach the practice of kindness and compassion. Do not use weapons to harm living beings.

一切皆懼死， 莫不畏杖痛，恕己可為譬， 勿殺勿行杖。能常安群生， 不加諸楚毒，現世不逢害， 後世長安隱。

> All beings fear death and dread punishment. Think of others as you would yourself: do not kill or cause harm. If you always bring peace to living beings and never inflict pain, you will meet no harm in this life and find lasting peace in the next.

不當麤言， 言當畏報， 惡往禍來，刀杖歸軀； 出言以善， 如叩鐘磬，身無論議， 度世則易。 歐杖良善、妄讒無罪， 其殃十倍， 災迅無赦：生受酷痛； 形體毀折； 自然惱病；失意恍惚； 人所誣咎； 或縣官厄；財產耗盡； 親戚離別； 舍宅所有，災火焚燒； 死入地獄。 如是為十。雖倮剪髮， 長服草衣， 沐浴踞石，奈癡結何？ 不伐殺燒， 亦不求勝，人愛天下， 所適無怨。 世黨有人，能知慚愧， 是名誘進， 如策良馬、如策善馬， 進道能遠。 人有信戒，定意精進， 受道慧成， 便滅眾苦。

> Do not speak harshly. Speak with regard for consequences, for evil deeds bring misfortune. Violence returns to your own body. When you speak with kindness, it is like striking a bell or chime— your conduct will not be criticized, and you will pass through the world with ease. Whoever beats the good and virtuous, or falsely accuses the innocent, will suffer tenfold calamity, with disasters swift and unforgiving: In life, they endure cruel pain; their body is broken and disfigured; afflictions and illness come naturally; their mind is confused and distraught; they are slandered and blamed by others; they meet with troubles from authorities; their wealth is squandered and lost; they are separated from kith and kin; their home and all they own are consumed by disastrous fire; and after death, they fall into hell. These are the ten. Though one goes naked and shaves one's head, wears rough grass-cloth for years, bathes and sits on bare stone— what can this do against the knot of delusion? Do not cut, kill, or burn; do not seek to overpower others. When a person loves all under heaven, wherever they go, they meet no resentment. If among the world's people there is one who knows shame and humility, this is called being guided forward— like spurring a fine horse, like spurring a good horse, advancing on the path, they go far. When a person has faith and precepts, concentrated intent, and diligence, receiving the path, their wisdom is perfected, and they put an end to all suffering.

自嚴以修法， 滅損受淨行，杖不加群生， 是沙門道人。無害於天下， 終身不遇害，常慈於一切， 孰能與為怨？

> They discipline themselves and practice the Dharma, Letting go of harm and living a pure life. They raise no staff against any living being— This is the way of a true renunciant. One who harms no being in the world Will meet no harm for all their life. Always kind to all that lives— Who could ever wish them ill?
