> Chapter 29: The Broad Teachings (Fourteen Verses)

> The Chapter on Expansion speaks of how all good and evil, when accumulated bit by bit, gradually grow into their full consequences—this is the principle demonstrated in its verses.

> Though a small offering given, Its reward grows vast and wide; Wisdom from a humble gift Brings a vision filled with grace. When you labor expecting grace, Troubles come, resentment grows. When deeds are many and ill-done, And pleasure seeks idle fun, Bad habits only strengthen more. Practice diligence with care, Do what’s right, discard what’s wrong; Cultivate yourself, awake— This, indeed, is true practice. When you gain insight yourself And pursue extensive learning, Wisdom spreads like oil in water. Without wisdom in your heart, Not fond of study or of art, Your mind curdles, small and tight, Like cheese melted into milk. Near the path, your fame shines clear, Like the snow on mountains high; Far from it, you stay in dark, Like an arrow shot at night. As a student of the Buddha, Ever mindful, stay awake: Day and night, recall the Buddha, Think of Dharma, and the Sangha. As a student of the Buddha, Ever mindful, stay awake: When day ends, turn to deep thought, Joyful, focused, one in mind.

> One should be mindful and aware, At each meal, eat but little— Thus desire for pain grows thin, Moderation preserves long life. Study is hard; abandoning wrongs is hard, Living in the world is also hard, Gathering with like-minded fellows is hard, And none is harder than being free from attachments. A monk’s life of begging is no easy path, So why not strive with true diligence? With steady effort, gain comes naturally, And later, no need to beg from others. With faith, moral discipline is achieved, From discipline, many treasures arise, Through it, one finds harmonious companions, And everywhere receives support. Sit in one place, sleep in one spot, Walk without laxity or indulgence. Guard the One, and truly correct the body, The heart finds joy dwelling among the trees.
