> The Master asked Zhicheng, "I hear that your meditation teacher instructs people only in Precepts, Concentration, and Wisdom. How does your teacher explain Precepts, Concentration, and Wisdom? Tell me!" Zhicheng replied, "Master Xiu explains Precepts, Concentration, and Wisdom this way: Not doing any evil is called Precepts; practicing all that is good is called Wisdom; purifying one's own mind is called Concentration. That is what he calls Precepts, Concentration, and Wisdom. That is how he teaches it, but I do not know what Your Mastership's view is." Master Huineng answered, "What he says is truly profound, but my view is different." Zhicheng asked, "How is it different?" Huineng replied, "There is a difference in how quickly or slowly one sees." Zhicheng requested the Master to explain his view of Precepts, Concentration, and Wisdom. The Master said, "Listen to what I say and see where my view lies: When the mind-ground is free of wrong, that is the Precepts of one's own nature. When the mind-ground is free of confusion, that is the Concentration of one's own nature. When the mind-ground is free of delusion, that is the Wisdom of one's own nature." The Master said, "Your teacher's Precepts, Concentration, and Wisdom are meant for people of lesser capacity. My Precepts, Concentration, and Wisdom are meant for people of great wisdom. One who awakens to their own nature does not even establish Precepts, Concentration, and Wisdom." Zhicheng said, "Please, Master, explain — how is it that they are not established?" The Master said, "One's own nature is already free of wrong, free of confusion, free of delusion. With every thought, wisdom observes and illuminates, always transcending the marks of phenomena — what is there to establish? The practice of one's own nature is sudden, with no gradual stages — that is why nothing is established." Zhicheng bowed in reverence and remained at Mount Caoxi, becoming a disciple. He never left the Master's side.
