又有一僧名神會，襄陽人也。至漕溪山禮拜，問言：「和尚坐禪，見亦不見？」大師起，把打神會三下，却問神會：「吾打汝，痛不痛？」神會答言：「亦痛亦不痛。」六祖言曰：「吾亦見亦不見。」神會又問：「大師何以亦見亦不見？」大師言：「吾亦見，常見自過患，故云亦見。亦不見者，不見他人過罪，所以亦見亦不見也。汝亦痛亦不痛如何？」神會答曰：「若不痛，即同無情木石；若痛，即同凡夫，即起於恨。」大師言：「神會！向前！見不見是兩邊，痛不痛是生滅。汝自性且不見，敢來弄人？」神會禮拜，再禮拜，更不言。大師言：「汝心迷不見，問善知識覓路；汝心悟自見，依法修行。汝自迷不見自心，却來問惠能見否？吾不自知，代汝迷不得；汝若自見，代得吾迷？何不自修，問吾見否？」神會作禮，便為門人，不離漕溪山中，常在左右。

> Another monk, named Shenhui, was from Xiangyang. He came to Caoxi Mountain to pay his respects and asked, "Master, when you sit in meditation, do you see or not see?" The Great Master rose, struck Shenhui three times, and then asked him, "When I hit you, does it hurt or not?" Shenhui replied, "It both hurts and does not hurt." The Sixth Patriarch said, "I both see and do not see." Shenhui then asked, "Master, how can you both see and not see?" The Master said, "I see, in that I constantly see my own faults—this is why I say I see. As for not seeing, I do not see the faults of others. Thus, I both see and do not see. But what about you—how can it both hurt and not hurt?" Shenhui replied, "If it did not hurt, I would be like insentient wood or stone. If it hurt, I would be like an ordinary person, and resentment would arise." The Master said, "Shenhui! Listen! Seeing and not seeing are two extremes; hurting and not hurting are subject to arising and ceasing. You have not even seen your own true nature—how dare you come and play tricks on others?" Shenhui bowed, bowed again, and said nothing more. The Master said, "Your mind is deluded and you do not see. You ask a good spiritual guide to show you the path. But when your mind awakens, you will see for yourself and practice accordingly. You are deluded and cannot see your own mind, yet you come and ask whether I see or not. I cannot know for you—if I were deluded, I could not replace your confusion. If you see for yourself, can you replace my delusion? Why not cultivate yourself instead of asking whether I see?" Shenhui bowed and became a disciple. He never left Caoxi Mountain, always remaining at the Master's side.
