眾僧既聞，識大師意，更不敢諍，依法修行。一時禮拜，即知大師不久住世。上座法海向前言：「大師！大師去後，衣法當付何人？」大師言：「法即付了，汝不須問。吾滅後二十餘年，邪法撩亂，惑我宗旨。有人出來，不惜身命，定佛教是非，竪立宗旨，即是吾正法。衣不合傳，汝不信，吾與誦先代〈五祖傳衣付法頌〉。若據第一祖達摩頌意，即不合傳衣。聽吾與汝誦。」頌曰：

> The monks, hearing these words, understood the Master's intention and no longer dared to argue. They practiced the Dharma accordingly. After paying their respects, they realized the Master would not remain in the world for long. The senior monk Fahai stepped forward and asked, "Master, after you are gone, to whom will the robe and the Dharma be entrusted?" The Master said, "The Dharma has already been entrusted. You need not ask. More than twenty years after my passing, false teachings will stir up confusion and disturb the core of our tradition. Then someone will appear who, risking life and limb, will settle disputes over Buddhism and firmly uphold the true teaching. That person will embody my orthodox Dharma. As for the robe, it should not be passed down. If you doubt this, let me recite for you the verses of the Five Patriarchs on transmitting the robe and the Dharma. According to the verse of the First Patriarch, Bodhidharma, the robe should not be transmitted. Listen and I will recite it for you." The verse goes: --- \*First Patriarch Bodhidharma said:\* \*"I came to this land to transmit the Dharma,\* \*Saving sentient beings from their entangled minds.\* \*One flower opens with five petals,\* \*And the fruit ripens of itself."\*

「第一祖達摩和尚頌曰：

> The First Patriarch, Venerable Bodhidharma, proclaimed in verse:

「吾本來東土， 傳教救迷情，一花開五葉， 結菓自然成。

> \## 第四章　The Transmission of the Lamp From the East I came, To save those astray, A single flower blooms five petals, The fruit ripens of its own accord.

「第二祖惠可和尚頌曰：

> You have requested a translation of a Chinese text. The text is: "第二祖惠可和尚頌曰：" Here is the translation: "Second Patriarch, the Venerable Huike's verse says:"

「本來緣有地， 從地種花生，當本元無地， 花從何處生？

> Originally, because there was soil, From that soil, flowers and seeds grew. But if in the very beginning there was no soil at all, Then from where could those flowers arise?

「第三祖僧璨和尚頌曰：

「花種須因地， 地上種花生，花種無生性， 於地亦無生。

「第四祖道信和尚頌曰：

「花種有生性， 因地種花生，先緣不和合， 一切盡無生。

「第五祖弘忍和尚頌曰：

「有情來下種， 無情花即生，無情又無種， 心地亦無生。

「第六祖惠能和尚頌曰：

「心地含情種， 法雨即花生，自悟花情種， 菩提菓自成。」
