The Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment

Homage to the Guru Manjushri.

Homage to the noble, serene sound of wisdom.

俱胝圓滿妙善所生身, 成滿無邊眾生希願語;

From countless perfect virtues, his body came to be, His speech fulfills the boundless hopes of all who hear; His mind sees all that is, with nothing left unclear— To Shakyamuni, master, I bow in reverence here.

Homage to the peerless Teacher and his foremost heirs, Bearers of all the Buddha’s works, Manifesting countless realms in playful display— I bow to Ajita and to Mañjuśrī.

To the victors’ teachings, vast and hard to fathom, They composed commentaries, ornaments of Jambudvīpa, Their fame spread throughout the three worlds— I bow to Nāgārjuna and Asaṅga.

Who skillfully carried the two great traditions, The profound view and vast conduct, free from error, The treasury of instructions for the complete path— I bow to Dīpaṃkara, the lamp of wisdom.

Beholding the eyes of countless Buddha teachings, The best steps for fortunate beings to escape saṃsāra, Moved by compassion, skillfully revealing the means— I bow to these spiritual friends.

Now many practitioners lack broad learning, While those with broad learning lack practical skill, They view the Buddha’s words with partial vision, And lack the power of reasoning to discern true meaning— Thus, they stray from the path that delights the wise.

Seeing the complete essence of the teachings and supreme instructions, I have explained this great tradition, So my mind is filled with joyful courage.

Those not shrouded by partial bias, Possessing discerning wisdom of good and evil, Who wish not to waste this precious human life— Let all who are virtuous listen with focused effort.

Here, the essence of all the Buddha’s teachings is fully gathered, encompassing the paths of the two great masters, Nagarjuna and Asanga. It serves as the definitive guide for those aspiring to reach the state of omniscience, laying out the complete sequence of practice for all three types of practitioners, with nothing missing. Through the stages of the path to enlightenment, it leads those with good fortune toward the ground of Buddhahood—this is what is explained in this text.

Here, there are two traditions of commentary: The wise scholars of glorious Nalanda hold that the Dharma should be explained through three aspects of purity—the purity of the teacher's words, the purity of the students' minds, and the purity of the teachings themselves. Later, when the sacred teachings flourished at Vikramashila, those wise masters held that three preliminary points were essential: the excellence of the author of the Dharma, the excellence of the Dharma itself, and the proper way to teach and listen to it. Here, we should follow the latter interpretation.
