Chapter 9: The Golden Wealth Story
Thus have I heard:
Thus have I heard: Once, the Buddha was staying at the Jeta Grove, in the Garden of the Benefactor of the Orphans and the Solitary, together with his venerable disciples, twelve hundred and fifty in number. At that time, there lived in the city a wealthy elder whose wife gave birth to a son. They named him Gold Wealth. The boy was extraordinarily handsome and handsome beyond compare. As a child, he was born with his hands clenched tightly. His parents were startled and thought it inauspicious, so they pried open his hands to examine them. To their astonishment, they found two gold coins in his palms. Overjoyed, they took the coins, but as soon as they did, new ones appeared in the same place. They took them again, and again they reappeared, just as before. In this way, though they collected the coins until their treasury was full, the coins in the boy's hands never ran out. As the boy grew older, he asked his parents for permission to leave home and become a monk. His parents did not oppose his wish and readily allowed him to go.
At that time, Gold Wealth went to the Buddha's presence, bowed his head in reverence, and said to the Buddha: "I beg the World-Honored One to have compassion on me and allow me to leave home and enter the path of practice!" The Buddha said to Gold Wealth: "I allow you to leave home." Having received the Buddha's permission, Gold Wealth then shaved his hair and beard, donned the monastic robes, and became a novice. When he had reached the appropriate age, eligible to receive the full precepts, the monastic community gathered for the ceremony of full ordination. As he approached the ordination platform, the monks each paid respects in turn. When he bowed, both his hands touched the ground, and wherever his hands touched the ground, two gold coins appeared. Thus, in sequence, as he paid respects to all present, coins appeared wherever he bowed. After receiving the full precepts, he diligently practiced and attained the stage of an Arhat.
Ananda said to the Buddha, "I do not understand, World-Honored One. What merit did this monk, Gold Coin, cultivate in the past that he has held gold coins in his hands since birth? I pray that you, World-Honored One, will reveal this to us." The Buddha told Ananda, "Listen carefully, and I will explain it to you now."
Ananda replied, "Yes, indeed! I will listen attentively."
The Buddha said: “In the distant past, ninety-one eons ago, a Buddha named Vipassī appeared in the world, teaching the Dharma and liberating countless beings. The Buddha and his community of monks traveled through the lands, and at that time, the wealthy elders and their sons prepared food and offerings to support the Buddha and his disciples.
At that time, there was a poor man who lacked material wealth. He made his living by gathering firewood in the wild marshes and selling it. One day, after collecting firewood, he sold it for two coins. Seeing the Buddha and the monks receiving the king’s invitation, he felt joyful and respectful, and with a sincere heart, he offered those two coins to the Buddha and the monks. The Buddha, moved by compassion for this man, accepted the offering.”
The Buddha then told Ananda: “Because that poor man offered those two coins to the Buddha and the monks, for ninety-one eons he was always born with gold in his hands, enjoying inexhaustible wealth and treasure. That poor man is now the monk Goldwealth. Even if he had not yet attained liberation, his future rewards would still be immeasurable. Therefore, Ananda, all beings should earnestly practice generosity as their foundation.”
