The Parable of the Fool Who Ate Salt
Once there was a foolish man who went to another's home. The host offered him food, but he complained it was bland and tasteless. Hearing this, the host added more salt. Once he tasted the saltiness and found it delicious, he thought to himself: "The reason it's so good is because of the salt. If a little makes it this good, how much better would a lot be?" Lacking wisdom, the foolish man then ate salt by itself. After eating it, his mouth became parched and he suffered for it.
This is like those who follow other paths, hearing that moderating one's diet can lead to enlightenment, and then proceeding to fast completely—for seven days or even fifteen—only to torment themselves with hunger without any benefit to their practice. Just like that foolish man who, because salt made the food delicious, ate it plain and brought suffering upon himself, so too are they.
