Hundred Parables Sutra (百喻經)

(4) The Woman Who Faked Her Death

Once upon a time, there was a foolish man whose wife was very beautiful, and he loved and cherished her deeply. But his wife was unfaithful. Later, she began an affair with another man, and her lust grew so strong that she wanted to leave her husband and run off with her lover. So she secretly said to an old woman: "After I leave, you take a dead woman's corpse and place it in my house. Tell my husband that I have died."

Later, when the husband was away, the old woman put a dead corpse inside the house. When the husband returned, the old woman said, "Your wife has died." He went to look, and believing it was indeed his wife, he wailed in grief and distress. He piled up firewood and oil, burned the body to collect the bones, and put them in a pouch that he carried with him day and night.

In the meantime, the wife grew tired of her lover and came back home. She said to her husband, "I am your wife." But he replied, "My wife died long ago. Who are you to falsely claim to be my wife?" Even when she repeated herself two or three times, he still refused to believe her.

Just so are those outside the true path. When they hear false teachings from others, they become confused and attached, taking them as absolute truth that can never change. Even when they hear the correct teachings, they refuse to believe or accept them.
