### （三三）斫樹取果喻

昔有國王，有一好樹高廣極大，當生勝果香而甜美。時有一人來至王所，王語之言：「此之樹上將生美果，汝能食不？」即答王言：「此樹高廣，雖欲食之何由能得？」即便斷樹望得其果，既無所獲徒自勞苦，後還欲竪，樹已枯死都無生理。世間之人亦復如是，如來法王有持戒樹能生勝果，心生願樂欲得果食，應當持戒修諸功德，不解方便，返毀其禁，如彼伐樹，復欲還活都不可得，破戒之人亦復如是。

> In ancient times, there was a king who possessed a magnificent tree, lofty, broad, and exceedingly great, destined to bear excellent fruit, fragrant and sweet. A man came before the king, and the king said to him, "This tree shall bear fine fruit. Can you eat it?" He replied to the king, "This tree is so tall and vast; though I wish to eat its fruit, how could I obtain it?" Thereupon, he cut down the tree, hoping to gain the fruit, yet obtained nothing and only wearied himself in vain. Later, wishing to set it upright again, the tree had already withered and died, with no life left in it. People in the world are likewise. The Tathāgata, the King of Dharma, possesses the tree of upholding precepts, which can bear excellent fruit. If one’s mind gives rise to aspiration and joy, desiring to taste the fruit, one should uphold the precepts and cultivate all meritorious deeds. Not understanding skillful means, one instead destroys the prohibitions, just like that man who felled the tree and then wished to revive it—both are impossible. Those who break the precepts are also like this.
