Medicine Buddha Samādhi Practice Sutra (藥師三昧行法)

Two Purifications, Three Karmas

The scripture states: For seven days and seven nights, observe fasting and precepts, eat pure food, bathe the body, and wear fresh, clean clothes. In the morning, chew a tooth-cleaning twig(i.e., willow branch), rinse and cleanse thoroughly. One should give rise to a mind free from defilement and disturbance, harboring no harmful intentions. Toward all sentient beings, cultivate a heart of benefit, peace, joy, compassion, loving-kindness, sympathetic joy, and equanimity. With music, songs, and praises, circumambulate the Buddha image to the right, recollecting the original vows and merits of that Tathagata, reciting this scripture, and contemplating its meaning.

The Lotus Samadhi states: When first entering the practice hall, one should bathe with fragrant water and wear fresh, clean garments—whether outer robes or other newly dyed clothing. If there are no new clothes, one should select the best among one's own garments to serve as practice hall attire. Afterward, when leaving the practice hall to go to an impure place, one should remove the pure clothes and put on impure garments. Once the task is completed, one should bathe again and put on the original pure clothes before entering the practice hall to engage in the practice.

The Fourth Brightness says: Even if one does not encounter any impurity for an entire day, bathing once is still necessary. Throughout the entire practice period, refrain from idle chatter and all social interactions, greetings, and inquiries. For the duration of the practice, follow the scripture in contemplation, without allowing even a moment's thought to worldly affairs. When attending to necessities like restroom visits or eating, one must maintain mindfulness and care, avoiding distraction or negligence. Once these matters are concluded, return immediately to the practice hall without delaying under any pretext.

The essential points are: regarding the body, discern what is permissible and what is not; regarding speech, discern when to speak and when to remain silent; regarding the mind, focus on stillness and insight.
