The Buddha Speaks the Sutra of Immeasurable Life is an important Buddhist scripture translated during the Cao Wei period by Saṃghavarman, belonging to one of the fundamental sutras of the Pure Land school. This sutra records how Amitābha Buddha, during his causal stage of practice, made forty-eight great vows and established the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. It also provides detailed descriptions of the majestic splendors of the Pure Land and the methods for rebirth there. The text emphasizes the practice of reciting the Buddha’s name, proclaiming that sentient beings can attain rebirth in the Pure Land through faith, vow, and mindfulness of the Buddha. This sutra has exerted a profound influence throughout Chinese Buddhist history. Together with the Sutra of Contemplation on the Buddha of Immeasurable Life and the Amitābha Sutra, it is known as the Three Pure Land Sutras, serving as the core basis for the study and practice of Pure Land adherents and playing a pivotal role in the widespread propagation of Pure Land faith within Chinese Buddhism.

The Buddha Speaks of the Infinite Life Sutra, Volume One

Translated by the Indian Tripitaka Master Saṅghavarman during the Cao Wei Dynasty.

This is what I heard:

At that time, the Buddha was dwelling on Vulture Peak near Rajagriha, together with twelve thousand great bhikkhus. All were great sages who had attained spiritual powers. And together with the assembly of Mahayana Bodhisattvas: Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva, Maitreya Bodhisattva, and all the Bodhisattvas of this present Fortunate Aeon.

All of them follow the virtues of the Great Being Samantabhadra, embody the boundless vows and practices of the Bodhisattvas, abide securely in all meritorious qualities, roam freely throughout the ten directions, exercise skillful means, enter the treasury of the Buddha’s teachings, reach the ultimate shore, and manifest perfect Enlightenment in countless worlds.

He dwelt in the Tusita Heaven, proclaiming the true Dharma. Then he left that celestial palace and descended to be conceived in his mother’s womb. He was born from her right side and took seven steps upon the earth. Radiant light shone forth, illuminating all the boundless Buddha‑lands in the ten directions. The six kinds of tremors shook the earth, and he declared aloud, “In this world I shall become the Unsurpassed Honored One. Indra and Brahma will serve me; gods and humans will turn to me.”

He displayed skill in calculation, literature, archery, and charioteering, mastering all arts and becoming thoroughly learned in every classic. He went to the rear garden to practice martial arts and test his skills. While dwelling in the palace amid pleasures and sensory delights, he beheld old age, sickness, and death, and awakened to the impermanence of worldly life. He renounced his kingdom, wealth, and rank, and went into the mountains to seek the Way. He sent back his fine steed, his jeweled crown, and his ornaments, bidding them return. Casting off his splendid robes, he put on the Dharma garment; he shaved his hair and beard and sat upright beneath a tree.

For six years he practiced austerities as was fitting. In this world of five impurities, he conformed to living beings, showing himself covered with dust and bathing in the Nairañjanā River. A deity bent down a branch so he could climb from the pool; divine birds accompanied him with their wings as he proceeded to the place of awakening. Auspicious signs appeared, revealing his future accomplishment. Compassionately accepting the offered grass, he spread it beneath the Bodhi tree, sat cross‑legged, and emitted a great radiance so that Māra would know.

Māra led his host to press and test him, but through the power of wisdom the Buddha subdued them all. He attained the subtle Dharma and achieved perfect, complete enlightenment. Indra and Brahma entreated him to turn the Dharma wheel. With the Buddha’s stride and the Buddha’s roar he roared; he struck the Dharma drum, blew the Dharma conch, grasped the Dharma sword, raised the Dharma banner, thundered the Dharma thunder, flashed the Dharma lightning, poured down the Dharma rain, and proclaimed the Dharma gift. Constantly with the sound of the Dharma he awakened all worlds; his light shone everywhere over measureless Buddha‑lands.

All worlds shook with the six kinds of tremors. He drew in the whole realm of Māra and shook the demon palaces; the host of demons trembled in fear and all submitted. He tore apart the net of wrong views, eliminated all false doctrines, scattered the dust of afflictions, and broke down the ramparts of desire. He guarded the citadel of the Dharma and opened wide the gate of the Dharma; he washed away defilement and revealed purity and clarity. He made the Buddha‑Dharma shine brightly and spread the true teaching.

Entering towns to seek alms, he received abundant offerings. He stored up merit, showed fields of blessing, prepared to expound the Dharma, and revealed a joyful smile. With the medicines of the Dharma he healed the three sufferings. He manifested the intent for the Way and immeasurable virtues, bestowed predictions on bodhisattvas for attaining perfect enlightenment, and displayed final nirvana to deliver beings without limit.

He eradicated all outflows, planted roots of virtue, and became endowed with merits—subtle, inconceivable, and beyond measure. He traveled through all Buddha‑lands, universally revealing the teaching of the Way. His practice was pure, free from any stain.

Just as a master illusionist conjures all manner of forms—transforming into men, women, anything at will—their art is clear and guided by intention, so too are these bodhisattvas. They study all teachings, weaving them together with skill. Wherever they dwell, serene and steadfast, they influence and transform all beings. Universally appearing across countless buddha‑lands, they are never arrogant or careless, but always compassionate toward living beings.

All such qualities they fully possess. They penetrate the essential depths of the bodhisattva canon, their renown reaching everywhere, guiding and teaching throughout the ten directions. Countless buddhas together watch over and protect them. They abide where the buddhas abide; they stand firm where the great sages stand. They proclaim the way and the teaching of the Tathāgatas, serving as great teachers for all bodhisattvas.

With profound meditation and wisdom, they guide sentient beings. They comprehend the nature of all dharmas, understand the characteristics of beings, clearly perceive all lands, and make offerings to all buddhas. They manifest bodies swift as lightning, skillfully mastering fearlessness and understanding illusory phenomena. They tear apart the nets of Māra and loosen all bonds. Transcending the stages of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas, they attain the samādhis of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness. Skillfully establishing skillful means, they reveal the three vehicles. Among those of medium or lesser capacity, they display nirvāṇa—yet they neither create nor possess anything, neither arise nor cease, having realized the equal dharma.

Fully accomplished in immeasurable dhāraṇīs and hundreds of thousands of samādhis, their faculties, wisdom, and serene concentration are vast and universal. They enter deeply into the treasury of bodhisattva teachings and attain the buddha’s *Avataṃsaka Samādhi*. Expounding and proclaiming all scriptures, abiding in profound states of concentration, they perceive all present buddhas without exception, in a single instant reaching everywhere.

They rescue beings from severe hardships, whether in favorable or adverse conditions, clearly revealing the true reality. They attain the buddhas’ wisdom of eloquence. Entering all languages and voices, they teach and transform everyone, surpassing all worldly phenomena.

Their minds constantly dwell in the path that liberates the world. Toward all things they are freely sovereign. For all kinds of beings, they become unasked friends, shouldering the heavy burden of carrying the multitude. They uphold the Tathāgata’s profound dharma‑treasury, protecting the buddha‑lineage so it never ceases.

Arousing great compassion, pitying sentient beings, they express compassionate discourse, bestow the dharma‑eye, close the three unfortunate paths, and open the gate of goodness. They give the unrequested dharma to all people, like a filial child loving and honoring parents. They regard all beings as themselves. All roots of goodness they bring to the far shore, fully acquiring the immeasurable merits and virtues of the buddhas— wisdom, sageliness, and brilliance beyond conception.

Thus, an immeasurable and incalculable multitude of bodhisattvas gathered together at that time.

At that time, the World-Honored One’s faculties were serene and joyful, his appearance pure and clear, his presence radiant and majestic.

The Venerable Ananda, receiving the sacred intent of the Buddha, rose from his seat. He bared his right shoulder, knelt respectfully with palms joined, and addressed the Buddha, saying:

“Today, World-Honored One, your faculties are serene and joyful, your appearance pure and clear. Your radiant countenance is majestic—like a bright mirror, its brilliance shines through, inside and out. Your majestic presence is resplendent, surpassing all measure. Never before have we beheld such extraordinary splendor as we see today.

Indeed, Great Sage! This thought arises in my mind: ‘Today the World-Honored One abides in a wondrous state; today the Hero of the World dwells where Buddhas dwell; today the Eye of the World rests in the conduct of a guide; today the Noble One of the World resides on the supreme path; today the Celestial Honored One acts with the virtue of a Tathagata. Buddhas of the past, future, and present are mindful of one another—could it be that our present Buddha is now mindful of all Buddhas? For what reason does your majestic power shine with such radiant light?’”

The Buddha then asked Ananda, "Tell me, Ananda, did the heavenly beings prompt you to come and ask me this? Or did you come to seek my guidance out of your own wisdom?"

Ananda replied to the Buddha, "No heavenly beings have come to instruct me. I ask this question based on what I have observed myself."

The Buddha said: "Excellent, Ananda! Your question is truly insightful. You have brought forth profound wisdom and genuine eloquence, and out of compassion for all beings, you inquire about this essential meaning of wisdom. The Tathagata, moved by his boundless and inexhaustible great compassion for the beings of the three realms, appears in this world. He reveals and clarifies the true teaching, so that all living beings may obtain the true benefit of the Dharma. For countless eons, this is rare and difficult to encounter, like a wondrous, auspicious flower that blooms only at certain times. The question you ask now will bring vast benefit, enlightening and transforming all heavenly beings and people."

Ananda, you should understand: the Tathagata's perfect enlightenment, his wisdom is immeasurable, guiding and leading many beings. His insight is unobstructed, and nothing can hinder it. With the power of a single meal, he can sustain his life for hundreds of thousands of millions of kalpas—countless, limitless, even beyond that. His faculties remain joyful and undiminished, his appearance unchanged, his radiance undimmed. Why is this? Because the Tathagata's concentration and wisdom are perfectly developed and boundless, and he has attained complete mastery over all phenomena.

Ananda, listen carefully. I will now explain this to you.

"I am listening, and I am eager to hear."

The Buddha told Ananda: "In the distant past, an immeasurable, inconceivable, countless number of eons ago, the Buddha named Lamp-Flame appeared in the world. He taught and liberated countless beings, enabling them to attain the Way and then enter final Nirvana.

After him, there appeared Buddhas named: Light-Far, Moonlight, Sandalwood-Fragrance, Good-Mountain-King, Sumeru-Crown, Sumeru-Equal-Radiance, Moon-Form, Right-Mind, Free-From-Defilement, Non-Attachment, Dragon-Deva, Night-Light, Peaceful-Bright-Peak, Immovable-Ground, Lapis-Lazuli-Wondrous-Flower, Lapis-Lazuli-Golden-Color, Golden-Treasury, Flame-Light, Flame-Root, Earth-Seed, Moon-Image, Sun-Sound, Liberation-Flower, Adorned-Brightness, Ocean-Awareness-Supernatural-Power, Water-Light, Great-Fragrance, Free-From-Dust-Defilement, Abandoning-Weary-Thought, Jewel-Flame, Wondrous-Peak, Courageous-Stand, Merit-Holding-Wisdom, Obscuring-Sun-Moon-Light, Sun-Moon-Lapis-Light, Peerless-Lapis-Light, Supreme-Leader, Enlightenment-Flower, Moon-Brightness, Sun-Light, Flower-Color-King, Water-Moon-Light, Dispelling-Ignorance-Darkness, Crossing-Veil-Practice, Pure-Faith, Good-Dweller, Majestic-Power, Dharma-Wisdom, Phoenix-Sound, Lion-Sound, Dragon-Sound, and Abiding-in-the-World.

All these Buddhas have already passed into Nirvana."

At that time, there next appeared a Buddha named King of Self-Mastery in All Worlds, the Tathagata, Worthy of Offerings, Perfectly Enlightened, Accomplished in Knowledge and Conduct, Well-Gone, Knower of the World, Unsurpassed One, Tamer of Men, Teacher of Gods and Humans, the Buddha, the World-Honored One.

At that time, there was a king who, upon hearing the Buddha teach the Dharma, felt profound joy and inspiration. He then gave rise to the supreme, genuine aspiration for enlightenment. He renounced his kingdom, relinquished his royal throne, and took up the life of a monastic, adopting the name Dharmakara. He possessed brilliant wisdom, courageous resolve, and was extraordinary, far surpassing the world.

He went to where the Tathagata King of Self-Mastery in All Worlds was, prostrated himself at the Buddha's feet, circumambulated him three times to the right, knelt respectfully with palms joined, and offered this hymn of praise:

His countenance is majestic and glorious, His awesome power is boundless and supreme. His radiance is brilliant and bright, Unequaled by any in the world. The sun, the moon, and the pearl's light, All their shining flames are dimmed, Like ink beside his splendor. The Thus-Come One's appearance Transcends the world, beyond compare. The great sound of his perfect enlightenment Resounds and flows throughout the ten directions.

His precepts, learning, diligence, Meditation, and wisdom— His awesome virtue has no peer, So rare and most supreme. With profound insight and wholesome mindfulness, He fathoms the ocean of all buddhas' teachings, Reaching its deepest depths, Exploring its farthest shores. Ignorance, desire, and anger— The World-Honored One has forever ended them. Hero among humans, lion of teachers, His spiritual power is immeasurable.

His merit is vast and broad, His wisdom deep and wondrous. His brilliant light and awesome marks Shake the great thousandfold world. "I vow to become a buddha, Equal to the Sage, the King of Dharma, To cross over birth and death, And bring liberation to all. Giving, mastering the mind, Precepts, patience, and diligence— Such meditative states Are guided by wisdom as the highest.

I vow to attain buddhahood, To universally fulfill this aspiration. For all who are fearful, I shall bring great peace. Even if there were buddhas Hundreds of thousands, millions, billions, Countless great sages Numbering as the Ganges' sands, And I made offerings to all those buddhas, It would not compare to seeking the Way With firm resolve, never retreating.

Suppose all the buddha-worlds, More than can be counted, Innumerable lands Were filled with shining light— Such diligence and awesome power Would still be hard to measure. May I become a buddha, With a land most supreme, Its assembly wondrous and rare, Its enlightenment-site surpassing all. My land will be like Nirvana itself, Without an equal. I shall take pity and compassion, To deliver and liberate all beings. May beings from the ten directions Come with joyful, pure hearts. Once they reach my land, May they find happiness, peace, and safety.

Fortunate indeed, the Buddha's faith and clarity Are my true witness. I direct my vows toward that goal, Striving diligently for what I seek. May the World-Honored Ones of the ten directions, With unobstructed wisdom, Always enable this Honored One To know my heart's intent. Even if my body were to dwell Amid all pains and poisons, I would practice with diligence, Enduring to the end, without regret."

The Buddha said to Ananda, "Having spoken these verses, the monk Dharmakara then addressed the Buddha, saying: 'O World-Honored One, I have now awakened the mind of supreme, perfect enlightenment. I beseech you to expound the Dharma teachings widely for me. I will practice accordingly, establish a pure and majestic Buddha-land of infinite wonders, swiftly attain perfect enlightenment in this world, and uproot the very root of birth, death, and all hardship.'"

The Buddha said to Ananda, "At that time, the Buddha Lokeshvararaja told the monk Dharmakara: 'As for the practice of adorning a Buddha-land, you yourself will know it.'"

The monk addressed the Buddha, saying, "The meaning of this is vast and profound, beyond my understanding. I only beseech the World-Honored One to fully explain the practices by which all Buddhas and Tathagatas purify their lands. Having heard this, I will practice accordingly and fulfill my aspiration."

At that time, the Buddha King of the World’s Freedom, knowing that his aspiration was lofty, bright, deep, and vast, then spoke these words to the monk Dharmakara:

“It is like the great ocean—if one person took a single dipper and measured it out, even after passing through countless eons, he could still reach its bottom and obtain its wondrous treasures. If a person with sincere heart and diligent effort seeks the Way without ceasing, he will surely attain the fruit. What wish could remain unfulfilled?”

Then, the Buddha Lokeshvararaja extensively described for him the virtues and flaws of the beings, as well as the coarseness and refinement of the lands, across two hundred and ten billion Buddha realms. In accordance with his heartfelt aspiration, he revealed them all to him.

Then, upon hearing the Buddha speak of the pure and magnificent lands, all those monks beheld them with clarity. They awakened a supreme and extraordinary vow, their minds serene, their aspirations free from attachment, unsurpassed by anything in the world. For five full kalpas, they contemplated and gathered the pure practices to adorn a Buddha-land.

Ananda asked the Buddha, "How long is the lifespan in that Buddha's land?"

The Buddha said, "That Buddha's lifespan lasted forty-two kalpas."

At that time, the monk Dharmakara had gathered the pure practices from two hundred and ten billion Buddha-lands. Having cultivated these, he went before the Buddha, bowed his head at the Buddha’s feet, circled the Buddha three times, joined his palms, and stood before him, saying: “World-Honored One, I have now gathered the pure practices that adorn a Buddha-land.”

The Buddha said to the monk, "You may now speak; the time is right. Let your words bring joy and inspiration to all. When the bodhisattvas hear this, they will practice this teaching and thereby fulfill their immeasurable vows."

The monk addressed the Buddha: "Please, grant me your attention and listen. As I wish, I shall now explain it fully.

"Suppose I attain Buddhahood. If bodhisattvas from other Buddha lands come to dwell in my land, they will unfailingly reach the stage of being one lifetime away from perfect Enlightenment — unless, driven by their own vows, they choose instead to manifest in other realms for the sake of sentient beings. In that case, they will: wear the armor of great vows, accumulate roots of virtue to liberate all beings, travel to various Buddha lands to practice the bodhisattva path, make offerings to countless Buddhas of the ten directions, guide infinite beings toward establishing the supreme, true path, and surpass ordinary stages of spiritual development by manifesting the universal virtue of Samantabhadra in their practice. If this is not realized, I will not attain perfect Enlightenment."

Countless eons of merit and virtue, accumulated through diligent practice, allow them to follow their heart's desires wherever they are born. Countless treasures naturally appear and respond to their needs. They guide and establish countless beings on the path to supreme, perfect enlightenment. They may appear as elders, householders, wealthy nobles, high-ranking officials, rulers of nations, or even wheel-turning holy kings, or as lords of the six heavens of desire and up to the King of the Brahma Heaven. They constantly offer the four kinds of service and reverence to all Buddhas. Such merit is beyond description. Their breath is fragrant and pure, like the utpala flower, and perfumed sandalwood scent issues from every pore of their bodies, wafting through countless worlds. Their appearance is noble, their features supremely wondrous. From their hands perpetually flow inexhaustible treasures: robes, food, drink, sublime fragrances, and fine ornaments such as canopies, banners, and ceremonial decorations. These and other magnificent qualities surpass those of gods and humans. They have attained mastery over all phenomena.

Ananda said to the Buddha: "Has Dharmākara Bodhisattva already attained Buddhahood and entered Parinirvāṇa, or has he not yet attained Buddhahood? Or is he presently existing?"

The Buddha told Ananda, "The Dharma Treasury Bodhisattva has now become a Buddha. He resides in the Western realm, which is a hundred thousand billion lands away from here. The world of that Buddha is called the Land of Peace and Bliss."

Ananda further asked, "How long has it been since that Buddha attained enlightenment?"

The Buddha said: "It has been ten kalpas since I attained Buddhahood. In that Buddha land, the ground is naturally made of seven treasures—gold, silver, lapis lazuli, coral, amber, crystal, and agate. It is vast, open, and boundless, with no limits. These treasures are all intermingled and blended together, their radiant light shining brilliantly. The land is exquisitely beautiful, pure, and majestic, surpassing all the worlds of the ten directions. Among all treasures in existence, these are the finest, comparable to the treasures of the Sixth Heaven.

Furthermore, in that land there is no Mount Sumeru, no surrounding diamond mountains, nor any great seas, small seas, streams, rivers, wells, or valleys. Due to the Buddha's spiritual power, these appear only when one wishes to see them. There are also no realms of hell, hungry ghosts, or animals—no realms of suffering. There are no four seasons—spring, autumn, winter, or summer. It is neither cold nor hot, but always temperate and perfectly balanced."

At that time, Ananda said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! If that land has no Mount Sumeru, what do the Four Heavenly Kings and the Trayastrimsa Heaven rely on to abide?"

The Buddha said to Ananda, "The Third Dhyana Heaven, up to the Heaven of Ultimate Form—what do they all rely on to abide?"

Ananda said to the Buddha, "The workings of karma and its results are truly inconceivable."

The Buddha said to Ananda: "The workings of karma and their results are inconceivable, and the realms of the Buddhas are also inconceivable. It is due to the power of the beings' virtuous deeds, dwelling in the domain of their actions, that such things come to be."

Ananda said to the Buddha, "I do not doubt this teaching myself, but I ask this question for the sake of future beings who will wish to dispel their doubts."

The Buddha said to Ananda, "The majesty, power, and radiant light of the Buddha of Infinite Life are the most supreme and honored—no other buddha's light can compare. Some buddhas' light shines over a hundred buddha-worlds, others over a thousand. In short, their light may reach eastward to countless sand-grain realms of the Ganges, and likewise south, west, north, the four directions, above, and below. The light of other buddhas may shine only seven feet, or one yojana, or two, three, four, or five yojanas—increasing by multiples until it illumines an entire single buddha-world.

For this reason, the Buddha of Infinite Life is known as: the Buddha of Limitless Light, the Buddha of Boundless Light, the Buddha of Unobstructed Light, the Buddha of Incomparable Light, the Buddha of Blazing Majesty Light, the Buddha of Pure Light, the Buddha of Joyful Light, the Buddha of Wisdom Light, the Buddha of Unceasing Light, the Buddha of Inconceivable Light, the Buddha of Indescribable Light, and the Buddha of Light Surpassing the Sun and Moon.

When sentient beings encounter this light, the three poisons of greed, hatred, and ignorance are eliminated. Their bodies and minds become pliable and gentle, they feel joyful and uplifted, and good thoughts naturally arise within them. Even those suffering in the three lower realms—the hellish, hungry ghost, and animal paths—when they see this light, find their suffering eased. They are no longer tormented by pain. After their lives end, they all attain liberation.

"The Light of the Infinite Life Buddha shines brilliantly, illuminating the realms of all Buddhas throughout the ten directions—there is no place that does not hear of it. Not only do I now praise this light, but all Buddhas, Sound-Hearers, Pratyekabuddhas, and Bodhisattvas also praise and honor it constantly.

If any beings hear of the power and virtue of this light, and with unwavering minds praise it day and night without ceasing, they will be reborn in that Buddha's land according to their wishes. There, they will be praised and honored by all Bodhisattvas, Sound-Hearers, and other beings for their merit and virtue. Even later, when they themselves attain Buddhahood, all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas throughout the ten directions will continue to praise their light—just as they do now."

The Buddha said, "The radiant light and majestic power of the Buddha of Infinite Life are so vast and sublime that even if one were to speak of them day and night for an entire kalpa, it would still be impossible to describe them fully."

The Buddha said to Ananda, "The lifespan of Amitayus is immeasurable and incalculable. Do you understand this? Suppose all the countless beings in the ten directions were to be reborn as humans, and every one of them were to achieve the states of voice-hearers or pratyekabuddhas. If they were all to gather together, focus their minds in meditation, and exert their full wisdom for hundreds of millions of kalpas, calculating together, they would still be unable to determine the limit or the end of Amitayus's lifespan. The same holds true for the lifespans of the voice-hearers, bodhisattvas, devas, and humans in his land—their lengths cannot be known through numbers or analogies.

Moreover, the number of voice-hearers and bodhisattvas there is so vast it cannot be measured or described. Their spiritual powers are profound and penetrating, their abilities are unimpeded, and they can hold all the worlds in the palm of their hand."

The Buddha said to Ananda: "In the first assembly of that Buddha, the number of voice-hearers was beyond counting. So too were the bodhisattvas. Even if you had beings as powerful as Mahamaudgalyayana — billions, trillions, countless millions of them — and they all spent their time from before the Buddha’s enlightenment until the end of his lifetime, and even through endless eons beyond that, and tried together to calculate that number, they could never, ever figure it out. It's like this: Imagine the great ocean, vast and boundless. Suppose someone took a single hair, split its tip into a hundred parts, and with that tiniest tip touched one drop from the ocean. What do you think? That single drop — compared to the whole ocean — which is greater?"

Ananda said to the Buddha, "The water on the fingernail, compared to the great ocean in terms of quantity, cannot be measured by clever calculation, numbers, words, or any comparison."

The Buddha said to Ananda: "As for the initial assembly of voice-hearers and bodhisattvas, if someone like Maudgalyayana were to calculate their number over a hundred thousand million billion eons, what he could count would be like a single drop—what he cannot know would be like the water of the great ocean."

Moreover, in that Buddha-land, various jewel trees fill the entire world—trees of gold, silver, crystal, sapphire, coral, agate, and mother-of-pearl. Some are made of two, three, or even seven precious materials combined. Some trees have a golden trunk with leaves, flowers, and fruit of silver; others have a silver trunk with leaves, flowers, and fruit of gold. Some have a crystal trunk with leaves of sapphire, and flowers and fruit likewise; or a sapphire trunk with leaves of crystal, and flowers and fruit likewise; or a coral trunk with leaves of agate, and flowers and fruit likewise; or an agate trunk with leaves of crystal, and flowers and fruit likewise; or a mother-of-pearl trunk with leaves of various gems, and flowers and fruit likewise.

There are jewel trees whose roots are purple gold, stems white silver, branches crystal, twigs sapphire, leaves coral, flowers agate, and fruit mother-of-pearl. Others have roots of white silver, stems crystal, branches sapphire, twigs coral, leaves agate, flowers mother-of-pearl, and fruit purple gold. Still others have roots of crystal, stems sapphire, branches coral, twigs agate, leaves mother-of-pearl, flowers purple gold, and fruit white silver. Some have roots of sapphire, stems coral, branches agate, twigs mother-of-pearl, leaves purple gold, flowers white silver, and fruit crystal. Then there are trees with roots of coral, stems agate, branches mother-of-pearl, twigs purple gold, leaves white silver, flowers crystal, and fruit sapphire. Or trees with roots of agate, stems mother-of-pearl, branches purple gold, twigs white silver, leaves crystal, flowers sapphire, and fruit coral. Finally, there are trees with roots of mother-of-pearl, stems purple gold, branches white silver, twigs crystal, leaves sapphire, flowers coral, and fruit agate.

These trees stand in orderly rows, each stem aligned, each branch matching, every leaf facing, every flower in harmony, each fruit in its place. Their radiant colors and brilliant light are too dazzling for the eye to behold. When a clear breeze arises, it produces five tones of music, the subtle notes of harmony naturally blending together.
