Chapter 1: Dependent Origination
世尊一時遊力士生處，至波波邑，住折路迦林。時彼邑中諸力士眾，於恒聚戲東西村間嗢跋諾迦舊制多所，共造臺觀，瑩飾初成，未有沙門婆羅門等及諸力士曾所受用。時力士眾聞佛世尊將苾芻僧住近林內，互相慶慰咸共議言：「我等所修勝妙臺觀，應先請佛及苾芻僧無上福田於中止住，然後我等隨勝善業所獲資財於中受用。由斯我等長夜獲得利益安樂，豈不善哉。」諸力士眾作是議已，各集徒侶并諸眷屬，出波波村往如來所。到已頂禮世尊雙足，右遶三匝退坐一面。時薄伽梵以慈軟音，慰問力士并諸眷屬，復以種種微妙法門示現教導讚勵慶喜，說是事已默然而住。諸力士輩聞佛所說，歡喜踊躍即從座起，合掌恭敬俱白佛言：「我此邑中諸力士眾，於恒聚戲東西村間嗢跋諾迦舊制多所，共造臺觀，瑩飾初成，未有沙門婆羅門等及諸力士曾所受用。唯願世尊哀愍我等，將諸弟子於中止住，令我長夜利益安樂。」爾時如來哀愍彼故，將諸弟子往住其中，復以妙音為諸力士宣揚種種施果差別。問答往還過初夜分，諸力士輩并其眷屬聞法歡喜禮佛而去。
Thus have I heard. At one time, the World-Honored One was traveling among the places of the powerful Mallas, and he arrived at the town of Pāvā, where he stayed in the Kusināra grove. At that time, all the Mallas in that town had built a pavilion together by the old shrine of Ubbhānaka, located between the eastern and western villages where they often gathered for amusements. This pavilion had just been adorned and completed, and no ascetic, Brahmin, or Malla had yet used it. Hearing that the World-Honored One and his community of monks were staying nearby in the grove, the Mallas rejoiced and consulted among themselves: "We should first invite the World-Honored One and his community of monks—the unsurpassed field of merit—to dwell in this excellent pavilion. Then, in accordance with our wholesome actions, we may enjoy the wealth we have gained from it. By doing so, we will surely obtain lasting benefits and happiness, both now and in the long run. Wouldn't that be wonderful?" Having thus decided, the Mallas gathered their groups and families, left Pāvā, and went to where the Thus-Come One was. Upon arriving, they bowed their heads at the World-Honored One's feet, circumambulated him three times to the right, and sat down to one side. The World-Honored One then greeted the Mallas and their families with a kind and gentle voice. He taught, inspired, praised, and delighted them with various sublime teachings. After finishing this, he remained silent. Hearing what the Buddha said, the Mallas rejoiced, rose from their seats, and with palms together reverently said to the Buddha: "All we Mallas in this town have built this pavilion together by the old shrine of Ubbhānaka, located between the eastern and western villages where we often gather for amusements. It has just been completed and adorned, and no ascetic, Brahmin, or Malla has yet used it. We only ask the World-Honored One to show us compassion and dwell there with his disciples, so that we may gain lasting benefit and happiness." Out of compassion for them, the Thus-Come One then went with his disciples and stayed there. With his wonderful voice, he explained to the Mallas various differences in the results of giving. The question-and-answer session lasted until the first watch of the night. The Mallas and their families rejoiced at hearing the Dharma, paid homage to the Buddha, and departed.
爾時世尊告舍利子：「吾今背痛，暫當寢息。汝可代吾為苾芻眾宣說法要，勿空度也。」時舍利子默然受教。佛便四疊嗢怛羅僧敷為臥具，大衣為枕，端身累足右脇而臥，如理作意住光明想及當起想，具念正知，如大寶山寂然無動。
爾時舍利子告苾芻眾言：「此波波村離繫親子，處無慚眾自號為師，其人命終未逾旬月，諸弟子輩兩兩結朋，諍訟紛紜互相𣣋蔑，各言法律我解非餘，如我所知是法是律，我之所說應理合儀；汝等於斯悉皆絕分。於其師教各隨己執，迴換前後或減或增，破析支離遂成多部。欲知勝負便共激論，為脫過難遞相誹斥，雖有論言而無論道，口出刀矟以相殘害。諸有白衣信彼法者，見其弟子乖諍如斯，皆共瞋嫌毀而捨去。」
時舍利子復告眾言：「此波波村離繫親子所有法律惡說惡受，不能出離、不趣正覺，是可壞法、無趣無依。我等如來、應、正等覺大師法律，善說善受，能永出離、能趣正覺，非可壞法有趣有依。我等今應聞佛住世，和合結集法毘奈耶，勿使如來般涅槃後世尊弟子有所乖諍，當令隨順梵行法律，久住利樂無量有情，哀愍世間諸天人眾，令獲殊勝義利安樂。」
