The *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* is one of the important Buddhist scriptures, translated from Sanskrit by the eminent monk Xuanzang of the Tang Dynasty. This sutra belongs to the fundamental texts of the Yogācāra school of Mahāyāna Buddhism, composed during the middle period of Indian Mahāyāna Buddhism. It primarily expounds on the philosophy of consciousness-only and the stages of practice. In the form of dialogues between the Buddha and his disciples, the sutra systematically discusses core doctrines such as the ālayavijñāna (storehouse consciousness) and the three natures and three non-natures, elucidating the profound principle that all phenomena are merely consciousness. As the theoretical foundation of the Yogācāra school, the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* has exerted a profound influence in the history of Chinese Buddhism. Together with the *Cheng Weishi Lun*, it constitutes the core canon of the Faxiang school. Its intricate philosophical system provides a significant basis for later studies of Yogācāra and holds a revered position within Chinese Buddhism.

Chapter 1: Prologue

Thus I have heard:

Once, the Bhagavan resided in a supremely luminous and splendid great palace, adorned with the seven precious gems, radiating a great light that illuminated all boundless worlds beyond measure. Countless exquisite ornaments were arranged throughout, its perfect circular expanse had no edges—its scale beyond conception—surpassing even the realms of the three worlds. It arose from virtuous roots that transcended worldly existence, and its nature was the most supreme, spontaneous, and pure consciousness.

This was where the Tathagata dwelt, where great Bodhisattvas gathered like clouds. Countless devas, nagas, yaksas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, humans, and non-humans always attended and followed. It was sustained by the joy and bliss of the vast flavor of the Dharma, bringing all beneficial aims to sentient beings, extinguishing all afflictions, calamities, entanglements, and defilements. It was far removed from all demons, surpassing all ornaments, standing as the very foundation of the Tathagata's adornments. Great mindfulness, wisdom, and conduct served as its pathways; great calm abiding and sublime insight were its vehicles; the great liberations of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness were its gateways. Adorned with countless qualities and established by the great jeweled king of flowers—this was the great palace.

This is the Bhagavan’s most pure enlightenment, a direct experience beyond duality, moving toward the formless truth. He abides in the Buddha’s dwelling, having attained equality with all Buddhas, reached the unobstructed realm, and mastered the irreversible Dharma. His actions are without hindrance, and what he establishes is inconceivable. He wanders through the three times with the nature of equality, his body pervading all worlds. In all dharmas, his wisdom is without hesitation or stagnation. In all actions, he has achieved great awakening. In all wisdom, he has no doubt. Whatever form he manifests cannot be distinguished. He possesses the true wisdom sought by all Bodhisattvas, has attained the supreme shore of the Buddha’s non-duality, free from all mixing. He has perfected the Tathagata’s liberation and subtle wisdom, realized the equality of the Buddha-realm without center or edge, reached the ultimate Dharma-realm, exhausted the nature of space, and extends to the limits of the future.

He was accompanied by a great assembly of voice-hearers, limitless in number. All were perfectly tamed, all were sons of the Buddha. Their minds were well liberated, their wisdom well liberated, and their moral discipline was pure and wholesome. They delighted in seeking the joy of the Dharma. They were learned, retained what they heard, and accumulated much knowledge through listening. They thought well on what was to be thought, spoke well on what was to be spoken, and did well on what was to be done. They possessed keen wisdom, swift wisdom, sharp wisdom, transcendent wisdom, supreme discerning wisdom, great wisdom, vast wisdom, and unequaled wisdom—they had attained the jewel of wisdom. They were endowed with the three clear understandings and had realized the foremost blissful abiding in the present life. They were a great pure field of merit, their demeanor serene and perfect in every way. They were greatly patient and gentle, possessing virtues that never diminished, and had already well practiced the sacred teachings of the Tathagata.

Also present were countless Great Bodhisattvas, who had gathered from various Buddha-lands. They all abided in the Great Vehicle, practiced the Great Vehicle, and regarded all beings with an equal mind. They had transcended all discrimination, non-discrimination, and various forms of differentiation. They had conquered all demonic foes and enemies, and had completely abandoned all intentions that lead to the paths of Hearers or Solitary Realizers. Sustained by the joy of the vast flavor of the Dharma, they had surpassed the five fears and were decisively advancing toward the stage of non-retrogression. They had calmed all the suffering and affliction that oppress beings, and stood right before them.

Their names were: the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva "Penetrator of Profound Meaning and Secret Intention," the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva "Inquirer According to Principle," the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva "Dharmodgata," the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva "Excellent Pure Wisdom," the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva "Vast Wisdom," the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva "Root of Virtue," the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva "Producer of Ultimate Meaning," the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva Avalokiteśvara, the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva Maitreya, the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva Mañjuśrī, and others as their leaders.
